Congress • Congress makes the laws • Congress is made up of two houses , the House of Representatives and the Senate • The laws are passed through both houses • If both houses agree on the law it goes to the president • There are 535 members of Congress • Both the House and the Senate can make bills

  3. The House of Representatives • The House of Representatives has 435 members • Only the house can make bills that have to do with government spending • Representatives of the house serve for 2 years • They can serve as many terms as long as they’re re-elected • The amount of representatives from each state is based off population

  4. The Senate • The senate has 100 members • Only the Senate can approve or reject treaties with other countries • Only the senate can approve or reject nominations for government office • Members of the Senate serve for 6 year • They can serve as many terms as long as they are re-elected • Each state gets 2 senators each

  5. The Veto • The president can veto a bill , this means that the president can send the bill back to congress • But Congress can vote for the law again • If 2/3 of congress vote for the law they can override the veto

  6. Checks and Balances • The Legislative Branch can check on the Executive and the Judicial • The Legislative can impeach the president , witch means they can take him out of office • They can also impeach a supreme court judge
