What is Rhetoric?

Contemporary Definitions:

-Using language effectively to please or persuade

-Persuasive speech or writing

Ethos or Credibility

Pathos or Emotion

Logos or Logic

  • Plays on fears, desires, humors, and sympathies of the audience.
  • -Connects to the hearts of the audience.
  • -Relies on the character of the speaker as an authority.
  • -Basically says, “Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.”

-Appeals to reason

-Makes logical premises that lead to conclusions.
