  1. Utah Society The Turn of the Century

  2. Objective • Students will understand how Utah Society was during the early 1900’s.

  3. Urbanization • By 1890, 36 percent of Utahns lived in cities. (compared to 34 percent of people nationally)

  4. Urban Transportation • Beginnings of a Mass Transit System • In 1889, Salt Lake got its first electric street railway.

  5. Why Did People Move to the Cities? • The main reason was work • Smelting, Construction, Operation of Railroads

  6. Urban Amenities • In 1880, Salt Lake replaced the older gas lights on main street with electric lights. • Telephone service came to Utah’s cities in the 1880’s as well.

  7. Urban Problems • Spiraling Crime • Commercial Street • Opium Dens

  8. Pollution • In the 1800’s, the cities supplied water in open ditches and many people simply dumped their trash in the same channels. • In the 1880’s, cities began laying pipes, but work was slow and in 1890, Salt Lake still had only five miles of pipe laid.

  9. Pollution • The smelters and coal fires in businesses and homes fouled the air with smoke and soot. • This dirtied the cities and choked people’s lungs. • Though some legislature was passed, politicians in the late 1800’s were often too afraid of offending business owners to make any big changes.

  10. New People

Immigrants • Germans, Dutch, Swiss came from continental Europe in the 1800’s. • After 1900, many immigrants also came from southern European countries like Greece and Italy. • Settling in coal camps and mining towns, many Italian immigrants found backbreaking labor and disgusting living conditions.

  12. The Auerbachs • The Auerbach brothers were Jewish immigrants who became prominent businessmen in Salt Lake City and founded the Auerbach’s store in 1864, which became known as the “People’s Store.”

  13. African Americans • A number of black pioneers came over with the first wagon trains. • Black cavalry and infantrymen served in Fort Duchesne and Fort Douglas.

  14. Native Americans • Reservations were created • Acculturation programs were implemented (often underfunded) • Forts and military posts were created to control Native American movements and prevent intertribal rivalry

Other Religions • The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Madeleine was dedicated in 1909. • Father Lawrence Scanlan was responsible for the building of the cathedral. • The Congregation Montefiore Jewish Synagogue served the needs of Salt Lake City’s Jewish community. • The old Presbyterian Church in Smithfield was both a church and a school.
