  1. 6 Traits of Writing Review January 2014

  2. Ideas • Needs to be descriptive • Try to focus on the prompt • Include a lot of sensory details A mind once stretched by a new idea never again regains its new dimensions ~Oliver Wendall Homes

  3. Sample Writing for Ideas • Read the sample paragraph below. List three details that the writer included. Why is this a good example for Ideas? If you might think the outside is cool, then the inside is going to blow your mind. When you first walk in, the smell of fresh pine and maple hits you, wrapping you in its warm and welcoming scent. The living room is spacious with two long, plush, tan L shaped couches in the west side corners and a cherry wood coffee table in front of them. On the east wall there is a 98 in. flat screen television with surround sound speakers. In the dining room, east of the living room, is a large designer cherry wood dining table that can fit sixteen people. Next to the dining room is a little sunroom with a variety of fruits and vegetables. The kitchen is amazing too; it is black with white polished marble counters. There is a double oven, so when I have friends and family over I can cook more than one thing at a time. Another thing that makes the kitchen different is in the island in the middle of the room. It has white leather stool seats and on top of the island is an enormous fish tank filled with bright blue fish and coal black ones.

  6. Organization • Interesting introduction • Conclusion that wraps up loose ends • Transition Words • Use Spatial Order where needed Organization is the enemy of improvisation ~Unknown

  7. Sample Writing for Organization • Read the example below. List three transition words that you see. What makes this a good example of Organization? Another thing about this girl is she is important to me in many different ways. She has always been here for me. I am always there for her also. In addition, she has taught me to keep trying to get better and to stay strong. She gives me a lot of good advice. She tells me not to take things from some people not personally. Another thing she says is if you can’t succeed the first time then just keep trying. But, I also try giving back as much as I can in return.

  10. Word Choice • Words are specific and precise • Words are varied throughout the essay • Words are use correctly and effectively Is it green or does it shine like the scales of a dragon? Often while reading a book one feels that the author would have preferred to paint than to write. ~Pablo Picasso

  11. Sample Writing for Word Choice • Read the paragraph below. Which words help you create images in your mind? Which words and phrases are vivid and descriptive? First, it’s important to know what the house looks like. Its not a large house, but its exactly the size I want. Its unique in its own way, and still has everything I need. When you first walk into the house you’ll see the living room with a small tv, comfy chairs, and a table for company. Right off the living room is the kitchen. The kitchen would have a blue-green, round island, bamboo covered cabinets, and a huge pantry full of all my favorite foods, and even some new, tropical fruits, fish, and more. Then there are the bedrooms. There would be three for my family. One room would have bunk beds, and my room would have a soft, gigantic California King bed; the biggest bed ever made. When you go downstairs, you’ll find the whole room is made of clear, hard, glass windows and is also underwater. You could see all the beautiful, colorful fish swim by in the cool, blue, ocean water. Downstairs is a giant game room with a flat screen Tv, beanbag chairs, pool, and a rack of movies, and board games.

  14. Voice • Choose something you care about • Let your personality come through A man’s style is his mind’s voice. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

  15. Sample Writing • Read the examples below. What can you tell about the writers? It was a Friday morning and I was trying to hurry up  to go to the bus so I’m hurrying down the hall from my room while trying to put on my shoe.. And well I fall down the stairs flat on my face.. No I did not cry and yes I did scream very loudly I have about twenty stairs started from the top and then I fell to the bottom and hit my face.. So I sit there for like five minutes and then I got up to get on my shoe.. So after I get up and get on shoe I decide “oh I’m hungry.”. So I go to the stove turn it on get the eggs out so after all that I go up to my room to grab my bag slowly and safely walk down the stairs this time and the eggs are literally on fire.

  16. Have you ever thought about sometimes you think your family is crazy. Well i do all the time so I am going to tell you about them. The first person I am going to talk about is my mom, she is nice and everybody call her the fun mom. She is 32 years old and she works as a babysitter at home because she has a bad back. The next person is my younger brother Kaleb, he is about to turn 10 he will in a week and he loves cars and riding his bike with friends. The last person I am going to talk about is my other little brother Kaden, he is 8 years old and he loves to play with Legos and loves doing things with my other brother. Well I lie the last person I am going to talk is me. I am 13 years old and I love to sing and dance and I love doing things with my brothers too. I love my family they have help with anything and I would help them with anything . Like I said I love my family and will always. Now that you have read about mine tell me about your family.

  19. Sentence Fluency • Use transitions to vary sentence beginnings • Vary Sentence Length • No Run Ons or Fragments All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath. ~ Unknown

  20. Sample Writing for Sentence Fluency • Read the example below. List the transition words that you see at the beginning of sentences. My cabin is where I live.  The ground floor has a kitchen and a living room with a television and a couch.  In between my kitchen and living room is a big fireplace that heats my cabin and right now you can smell the wild hog roasting over it.  In the attic I have a bed where I sleep and all of my clothes and things.  Next, the basement has extra food storage and a pool.  The pool has a diving board and a slide.  That is where I have parties and have fun with my friends when we are not playing baseball or football.  Outside my cabin, I have a pen of cattle and another pen for my horse and the other war horses my army uses.  I have so much fun here.

  23. Conventions • No errors • Think about commas, capitalization, and apostrophes • Try to use some creative punctuation (semicolons, colons, etc.) I never made a mistake in grammar but one in my life and as soon as I done it, I seen it. ~Carl Sandburg

  24. Sample Writing for Conventions • Read the example below. How does the writer use punctuation to help you understand the writing better? Her personality is a very friendly and kind. When she is around you she will make you laugh so much with just anything she says and is very bubbly. Marin is really outgoing and loves to play sports(volleyball, track, and basketball) and lives her life to the fullest. If you do something like slap her she has a little bit  of an anger issue. Haha, trust me I have done it before. Also if she is hungry, watch your food because she LOVES FOOD almost more than life. Marin’s personality is one of the big reasons we are such good friends, and she is important to me!
