  6. 1900 • 1897: Olds Motor Vehicle Company (oldest unit of GM)is founded First Oldsmobile is produced • 1901: The curved-dash Oldsmobile becomes the first American car to be manufactured in quantity • 1902: Cadillac Automobile Company is organized in Detroit

  7. 1910 • 1911: General Motors Truck Company (later GMC) is founded in July 22 • 1912: All GM truck operations are consolidated in Pontiac, Michigan • 1918: General Motors buys the operating assets of Chevrolet Motor Company in May UMC becomes part of GM

  8. 1920 • 1921: The Clark Street Cadillac factory begins production. At this time, it is the most modern plant in the industry. It remains in production until 1987

  9. 1940 • 1940: GM produces its 25,000,000th car The German government officially seizes control of Adam Opel AG. • 1942: GM converts 100% of its production to the war effort. • 1948: GM resumes management control of Adam Opel AG

  10. 1950 • 1950: Opel's Rüsselsheim plant is rebuilt. • 1953: GM acquires Euclid Road Machinery Co. with plants in Euclid, Ohio, and Lanarkshire, Scotland. • 1958: GM marks its 50th anniversary with a year-long Golden Milestone celebration.

  11. 1960 • 1962: GM produces its 75,000,000th U.S.-made vehicle The number of GM shareholders passes the 1,000,000 mark. Adam Opel, A.G. celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1862. Opel opens its new plant at Bochum, Germany.

  12. 1967: GM produces its 100,000,000th U.S.-made vehicle (April 21). • 1968: The new 50-story General Motors Building opens in New York. • 1969: GM manufactures the guidance and navigation systems which guide the Apollo 11 astronauts to man’s first landing on the moon and safely back to earth.

  13. 1970 • 1970: GM production in the U.S. is stopped by a 10-week UAW strike. • 1971: GM forms an Environmental Activities Staff to concentrate on the performance of GM products in the environment. • 1971- 1990: GM forms GM subsidiaries in Malaysia, Iran, Korea....

  14. 1980 • 1980: GM spends $ 40 billion to redesign its vehicles and modernize its assembly plants. • 1983: GM and Toyota Motor Corporation agree to form a joint venture. GM observes its 75th anniversary . More than 235 million vehicles worldwide have been produced since its incorporation in 1908.

  15. 1986: General Motors acquires Group Lotus, the U.K. GM withdraws from South Africa. GM and Volvo form a joint venture in the U.S.

  16. 1990 • 1990: With Iraq's invason of Kuwait, the U.S. economy and vehicle market decline. • 1992: A major reorganization is launched with the establishment of North American Operations, based in Michigan, and General Motors International Operations, based in Zurich. • 2000: GM sells 8,600,000 cars a year.
