  8. 2011 has been declared a year of job creation through meaningful economic transformation & inclusive growth

  9. SME Toolkit SA • 8 out of 10 new businesses in SA fail within the first two years, for a variety of reasons. Two groups of entrepreneurs were highlighted: • Necessity entrepreneurship focusing on survival ie entrepreneurs starting a business to take care of themselves and their own families financially. • Opportunity entrepreneurship aimed at identifying and seeing the opportunity to establish a growing business that creates employment for others.   17. 2011 SoNA – Impact on Tourism Portfolio Committee • Actively engage with tourism stakeholders – • committee briefings, oversight visits to tourism • initiatives and projects. • Monitor Government’s adherence to the call of job • creation through meaningful economic transformation • & inclusive growth. • Scrutinise the budget, Strategic Plans and Annual • reports of the DoT to ensure compliance with • Government priorities and spending. • Monitor programes and spending priorities of state • owned enterprises and development funding • institutions such as the Industrial Development • Corporation (IDC) to ensure these are aligned with the • job creation agenda

  18. 2011 SoNA – Impact on Tourism Portfolio • Committee – cont. • Lobby structures such as • African Union – AU • New Partnership for Africa’s Development – NEPAD • Pan African Parliament – PAP • Southern African Development Community – SADC • to market SA on the African continent • Facilitate collaborative efforts between Government, • private sector, labour federations and • communities through having workshops, briefings • and public hearings • Assist in the transformation of the tourism sector to • ensure that opportunities are created for all SA • citizens to benefit from this growing sector of the • economy.

  19. 2011 SoNA – Impact on Tourism Portfolio • Committee – cont. • SA became the 5th member of the Brazil, • Russia, India and China group of • developing economies. In April SA will • attend the BRICS summit in Beijing. This is • an opportunity to gain substantial trade and • investment benefits. DoT should be involved • Job creation should enhance youth development. • DoT and National Youth Development Agency & • Private sector should facilitate youth development • in Tourism programes & promote youth tourism • enterprises.
