Expectations of Advisor/Advisee Advisors • Be available and respectful to students • Be efficient and accurate when discussing degree requirements • Understanding of core curriculum, institutional requirements, and degree requirements • Assist students in developing decision-making skills and encourage them to accept responsibility for their choices • Maintain confidentiality • Encourage and support students as they develop realistic goals and attainable educational plans. Advisee • Be respectful of his/her advisor • Schedule appointments with his/her advisor and be on time • Come prepared for appointments by becoming familiar with the UNG Catalog, core curriculum, and program of study for his/her major • Check UNG email regularly and become familiar with Banner • Accept responsibility for his/her decisions • Familiarize themselves with the academic calendar and be aware of important deadlines

Mandatory Advising • Students are required to meet with their assigned professional advisor every semester up to 45 earned credit hours. • Discuss academic requirements for your degree • Learn UNG policies and procedures • Plan future steps in your education • Monitor your academic progress • Learn about resources to succeed academically and personally • How will students know to meet for Mandatory Advising? • A hold will be placed on BannerWeb by the Advising office each semester. • Regular Advising • We encourage all students to meet with their advisors at any time for reasons not related to mandatory advising.

Things to Know About UNG Computer Science • Campus Availability • Associate’s of Science in Computer Science only available on the Gainesville Campus • Can only take 1000 – 2000 level courses at the Associate’s level • Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science only available on the Dahlonega Campus • Can take 1000 – 4000 level courses at the Bachelor’s level • Internal Transfer • Computer Science, A.S. students on Gainesville must internally transfer to Dahlonega to complete B.S. Computer Science. • B.S. Computer Science students on Gainesville must internally transfer to Dahlonega to complete 3000 – 4000 level courses. • Computer Science courses require minimum grade of a C or higher

Plan of Study and Core Curriculum • Plan of Study (POS) • Provides the list of requirements for completing a degree at UNG. • Outline of what you need to take to graduate from UNG with a Computer Science major • Includes Core Curriculum Courses (Areas A – E), Major Specific Courses (Area F & Major Requirements), and Electives • Lists Graduation requirements • Separate POS sheets for each Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees • Core Curriculum • Six Areas: A – F • Courses cannot be applied to more than one area • Declared major may require or recommend courses in specific areas • Update your POS every semester and bring it to ALL advising appointments!

Involvement Beyond the Classroom:UNG Student Life Elite Competition Opportunities: The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems offers two elite competition opportunities for Computer Science students. Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) Team Codin’ Nighthawks UNG Programming Team: Competes annually at ACM and CCSC programming competitions in the region. Traditional Programming Team through the Mike Cottrell College of Business. Students may participate in with weekly practices to the Southeastern Qualifying Competition.
