  3. What is feudalism? • Feudalism is a political system based on bonds of loyalty between lords and vassals.

  4. DISCUSSION • Discuss the following with your partner: • Which other place have we studied developed a feudal system?

  5. Why did feudalism develop? • 1. Charlemagne dies which leads to the fall of the Carolingian Empire. • 2. There is no political organization that can offer protection against the constant invasions and tribal warfare.

  6. Why did feudalism develop? (cont.) • 3. From the chaos the feudal system developed to provide law and order to Europe for several centuries.

  7. Why did feudalism develop? (cont.) • MAIN IDEA: • TO PROVIDE LAW AND ORDER IN EUROPE

  8. Where did feudalism begin? • Feudalism began in Western Europe mainly in France and England.

  9. How did feudalism expand? • Feudalism started on a small scale to provide law and order. • Overtime, powerful lords and kings began to centralize military power creating nation-states.

  10. WRITING • Write 2-3 sentence about the following: • What did the Kings/Lords grant to Knights/Vassals? • What did the Knights/Vassals provide in return?

  11. Lords • Kings and queens were the greatest lords of Europe, and all nobles and knights were their vassals.

  12. A Lord’s Duties • To send help to his vassals if an enemy attacked. • Must be fair to his vassals and not cheat them. • To give land to a vassal. • Make laws to rule his land, settle disputes, collect taxes.

  13. Vassals • A vassal was a noble who served a lord of higher rank by offering him protection on demand. • In return, the lord gave land to the vassal.

  14. A Vassal’s Duties • To fight for his lord when war was declared if he was a knight. • Give his lord money on special occasions. • Give his lord food and shelter when he came to visit.

  15. What are Knights? • Knights were professional warriors that fought on horseback. • They provided protection to the lord in exchange for land. • Only nobles could become knights since horses, armor, and weapons were very expensive.

  16. DISCUSSION • Discuss the following with your partner: • How did feudalism create law and order?

  17. Textbook Time • Look at the Medieval Castle on page 527. • 1. Why were castles built? • 2. Why did they build a castle on high ground or surround them with a moat?

  18. Who did most of the actual work? • SERFS/PEASANTS • They agreed to do most of the work in exchange for small parcels of land. • This exchange is known as the manor system.

  19. What could the Serfs/Peasants do with their land? • They could grow their own crops to help feed their families. • They could also sell away their crops. • However, they could not sell the land they were given.

  20. A Serf’s Duties • The serf had to work the lord’s land each week. • The serf had to pay the lord to grind his grain into wheat and to bake his bread. • The serf could not leave the manor without the lord’s permission.

  21. WRITING • Using the Schaffer writing model, answer the following: • READ PAGES 532-533 • Do you think feudalism helped or hurt Western Europe’s development?
