  1. Power and Control

  2. Introduction • Our aim is to show how the theme of power and control is presented in L.O.T.F. and Macbeth. Both stories involves characters that are hungry for power and are willing to kill to receive the power that they desire. • This is represented in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth killing Duncan to win power and in L.O.T.F. Jack and Roger used fear of the beast to win power.

  3. Power in L.O.T.F. • In the beginning, Ralph was elected chief. Jack decides that he would like some power after hunting pigs.He wants to use violence to gain support, opposing Ralphs democratic ways. Jack abandons the group and starts his own group or tribe as he calls it. Others follow his way as they would like food and protection from the so called beast that they claim is real.

  4. Power in Macbeth • After meeting the witches, Macbeth finds out about the prophecy. Slowly after this when he sees the prophecy come true, he becomes more powerful and starts to do things in his favour to make sure he is king. He even kills his cousin, King Duncan to make the prophecy come true. Over time he becomes king and is obsessed with power and making sure the prophecy comes true and he is the best he can be. He even orders his best friend and his son to be killed because the prophecy said his son would be king and take over his power from him.

  5. Similarities • In both Macbeth and L.O.T.F. there are characters that are addicted to power. Those characters are prepared to do anything to make sure they are as powerful as they can be.They would even kill others just to pursue the power that they are obsessed with.

  6. Differences • Jack is using fear to gain his power.Macbeth believes the prophecythat the witches told him. Jack is using fear of the beast so that everyone will rely on him protecting them from the beast so that he will gain power through the fear of the boys. Macbeth is using shear power and violence. He even kills his cousin and king, Duncan to become the new king of Scotland.
