  2. Aspiranet Encore Fellows November Cohort Meeting Agenda

  3. What are Encore Fellowships? Encore Fellowships deliver new sources of talent to the task of solving critical social problems. The fellows are experienced professionals at the end of their midlife careers with social-purpose organizations, in well-defined, high-impact projects. The fellowship typically lasts 12 months, half-time in an embedded role with the work host. “Encore” demographics support a large-scale shift of talent across sectors of the type that the fellowship is intended to facilitate.

  4. The imperative for a national expansion The very successful 2009 program pilot and a 2010 replication year amply demonstrated the program worked well. There was plenty of room for growth and innovation. Civic Ventures did not want to build or operate a large-scale program itself, but could see that it would not happen on its own. What should Civic Ventures do?

  5. Strategy • Create a network to extend the Encore Fellows mission nationally • as quickly as possible • with high quality implementation • with minimal investment, central operating costs and structure • “Civic Ventures created the Encore Fellowships Network (EFN) to make it as easy as possible for organizations to start, sponsor and operate effective Encore Fellows programs.”

  6. The Result: • The Encore Fellowships Network • The Encore Fellowships Network (EFN) acts collectively to bring Encore Fellows to the nonprofit talent market. The initial role of the EFN hub is to: • define the core program model and network structure, • build and maintain the common brand, • identify and work with prospective network participants, and • provide affiliated organizations with essential information, tools and operating platform, and connections.

  7. EFN Network Roles (nodes) (Aspiranet and you) work hosts & fellows program operator (Aspiranet) (Aspiranet) (Us) Funders Hub

  16. Some topics to discuss • What has been your experience so far? • What are the strengths of the “single work host model” Encore Fellows program vs. other program types? • What is the potential of the “single work host model”? How to grow that impact… • How can the Encore Fellowships Network support or leverage your work?

  17. Encore Fellowships Network Scaling Strategy • 2010-2012 Plan • Operates Silicon Valley program as a showcase and “lab.” • Defines and catalyze a network operating model. • Codify program materials and superb technical assistance and tools. • Rapidly test variations for export and operation by others. • Build institutional partnerships which add legitimacy and growth • A fast-replicating network model which can be self-sustaining in three to five years. • Assure program quality through formal Core Program designation, a rigorous and standard program evaluation process, and transparent and shared data.
