  • 12 Colleges in London Anglia Partnership Area (9 GFE, 3 Sixth Form, 1 Specialist College + 1 Adult Institute)
  • Catering for approx. 90,000 students
  • 35,000 16-18 year-olds (more than schools)
  • Over 2,000 apprentices
  • Over 2,000 higher education places
  • More than 50% of those going to University from the area go via a college
  • Total turnover of over £250m
  • More than 4,500 employees
  • 90% positive satisfaction rate from students & employers

MEETING LOCAL SKILLS NEEDS:THE CHALLENGES
  • 30,000 new jobs created in Hackney in the last 4 years
  • Almost all in the Tech City Area
  • Hackney employment rate up to 71%
  • But worklessness number remains high
  • 46% of Hackney’s population now have a degree; up 10% in 4 years
  • A survey of 50 Tech SMEs said they could fill 100 vacancies that day if the people were available
  • And vacancies were slowing growth
  • So what can be done to get local people into the new jobs?
  • And how can we ensure a supply of skills which match employers’ needs?

  • Places them with SMEs for a weekly fee
  • Large Corporate Partners

  • Recruit Apps to jobs at the end if they like what they see

  • Which specialises in technical studies
  • Sponsored by Hackney Community College
  • Supported by employers and Universities
  • Offers full time courses which combine technical, practical and academic studies
  • The curriculum is stimulating & demanding
  • Designed and delivered with employers
  • 40 weeks per year and an extended day
  • Much learning is through projects
  • Specialisms in Digital & Health Technology

THE ROLE OF EMPLOYERS: BT GROUP
  • BT supporting HUTC (+ two Academies in Hastings & Manchester)
  • BT is one of two ‘lead employers’ and one of 12 employers on the Board
  • Bringing in top level digital and health technology expertise
  • On sector curriculum groups to ensure courses relevant to industry need
  • Setting two, six-week projects per year, alongside 20 other companies
  • Will help with delivery of the programme and in the assessment
  • In-company workplace visit programmes and work experience – post 16
  • Seconded a marketing expert to support promotions e.g. social networking
  • Will contribute to employability work e.g. HR support for interviews
  • Will ensure HUTC are well briefed on routes into BT apprenticeships and sponsored internships
  • Part of BT’s commitment to help ensure a skilled London workforce
