Dental Implants

Replacing your missing teeth with dental implants and implant-retained teeth may allow you to live your life more fully. When your treatment is complete, you should be able to chew, speak and socialize without experiencing the negative emotions that having missing teeth or hard-to-wear dentures can sometimes cause. Dental implants can also eliminate the need for denture adhesives.

Dental implants and implant-retained teeth will help minimize the amount of bone that will be lost in the areas of missing teeth. Preserving oral bone may help maintain your natural facial contours. Also, replacing your missing teeth may reduce the risk of having poorer nutritional habits often found in patients who do not replace missing teeth.

Most patients can be treated with dental implants. We can evaluate your situation carefully with an exam and x-rays and will make specific recommendations for the best treatment. Call us today for more information on how you might benefit from dental implants and implant-retained teeth.

Dental Implant Problems and Complications

While dental implants have a long term high success rate, an average of 10% to 20% of dental implants suffer from various complications. One of the most commonly seen dental implant complications is bone loss around dental implants called peri-implantitis. There are many different treatment options for peri-implant diseases and one of the most successful modalities is guided bone regeneration (adding bone and membrane to the ailing implants). Other treatment options include laser therapy and local delivery of an antibiotic. Drs. Barber and Ho have rescued many ailing implants and has saved his patients from losing their implant restorations. If you are told by your dentist or hygienist that your implant is in trouble, please contact our office today to see Drs. Barber or Ho.

Combination Procedures

A combination of periodontal procedures can result in a beautiful new smile and improved periodontal health – your keys to smiling, eating and speaking with comfort and confidence.

This procedure corrects depressions in your gum line that are unnatural looking and sometimes make you seem older than you really are. We may use several different types of procedures as described above to build a framework for your perfect smile. Usually, periodontal plastic surgery lays the foundation for further cosmetic enhancements by your general dentist.

Sinus Bone Augmentation

Sinus bone augmentation is used to add bone into your maxillary sinus in order to gain enough bone height for future dental implant placement. This procedure can correct insufficient bone height in your upper jaw and make it possible to place dental implants in the upper back where implants previously were not possible. Sinus bone augmentation has become a common procedure as more people are getting dental implants to replace missing teeth or removable dentures. Dr. Ho has extensive training and experience in sinus bone augmentation procedures should you need a sinus bone graft procedure in order to receive dental implants.

Periodontal Maintenance

In any treatment plan for periodontal diseases, we emphasize the importance of removing plaque by daily brushing and flossing between the teeth. Good oral hygiene is essential to help keep periodontal diseases from becoming more serious or recurring.

In addition, we will want to see you more frequently and at regular intervals following a period of active therapy. This helps to assure that you are maintaining a satisfactory level of oral hygiene. It also gives us the opportunity to remove any plaque or calculus that may have accumulated and to check your mouth to be sure that your periodontal disease remains under control.

Treatment of Periodontal Diseases

The treatment method for periodontal diseases depends on the kind of disease and how far the condition has progressed. Regardless of the treatment plan, good daily oral hygiene is essential for the success of any periodontal therapy.

The first step is usually a thorough cleaning which may include scaling to remove plaque and calculus deposits beneath the gumline. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface so that gum tissue may heal next to the teeth. In some cases, the occlusion (bite) may also require some adjustment.

Antibiotics or irrigation with antimicrobials (agents or mouthrinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of subgingival bacteria which create toxins and cause periodontitis.

Surgery may be required when deeper pockets (over 4 to 6 mm) are found. It is difficult for the dentist or hygienist to thoroughly remove plaque and calculus from deep pockets. Patients can seldom keep them clean and free of plaque. Allowing pockets to remain may lead to infection and bone destruction. Some types of bone defects can be filled with bone grafts.

Ridge Augmentation

Ridge augmentation procedures are used to correct concavities in the jawbone where natural teeth are missing.

This procedure corrects depressions in your gum line that are unnatural

looking and sometimes make you seem older than you really are. It is

also used to prevent the jawbone from collapsing following tooth

extraction, and helps to even out replacement teeth that may seem too

long compared to adjacent teeth.

Gum Grafting

During root coverage, gum tissue from your own mouth or other materials are used to facilitate coverage of the exposed root. This can be done for one tooth or several teeth to even your gum line and reduce sensitivity.

Soft tissue grafts can be used to cover roots, develop gum tissue where

absent due to excessive gingival recession or to make prosthetic devices,

such as dental implants, look natural. In some cases, they can cover

exposed roots to protect them from decay and prepare teeth for

orthodontic treatment. This may reduce tooth sensitivity and improve

the esthetics of your smile as well.

PERIODONTAL CARE

Causes of Periodontal Diseases

Periodontal diseases are caused by certain types of bacteria in plaque, the sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. Plaque that is not removed can combine with other materials and harden into a rough, porous deposit called tartar. These bacteria create toxins which irritate the gums and result in a break down of the attachment of gum tissues to teeth. Over time, these toxins can destroy gum tissues, allowing the infection to progress to bone loss.

PERIODONTAL CARE

Types of Periodontal Diseases

While there are many forms of gingival and periodontal diseases, the most common types are gingivitis and adult periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the earliest stage, and affects only the gum tissue. At this stage, the disease is still reversible. If not treated, however, it may lead to a more severe condition.

Periodontitis is the more advanced stage of periodontal disease. The gums, bone and other structures that support the teeth become damaged. Teeth can become loose and fall out, or may have to be removed. At this stage, the disease may require more complex treatment to prevent tooth loss.

PERIODONTAL CARE

Other Factors Contributing to Periodontal Diseases

Although periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a number of other factors can increase the risk, severity and speed of development of the condition:

*Smoking or chewing tobacco

*Poorly fitting bridges, badly aligned teeth or defective fillings

*Habits which place excessive biting forces on your teeth

*Poor diet

*Pregnancy or use of oral contraceptives

*Systemic diseases such as AIDS or diabetes which can lower the tissues’ resistance to infection

*Medications such as steroids, anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs and some calcium channel blockers affect the gums.

PERIODONTAL CARE

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

*Gums that bleed easily

*Red, swollen or tender gums

*Gums that have pulled away from the teeth

*Pus between the teeth and gums when the gums are pressed

*Persistent bad breath or bad taste

*Permanent teeth that are loose or separating

*Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

*Any change in the fit of partial dentures

PERIODONTAL CARE

Prevention of Periodontal Disease

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime is possible if you take proper care of them:

*Clean your teeth daily by brushing thoroughly at least twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that is in good condition.

*Use dental floss or other interdental cleaners to aid in removing plaque from between teeth.

*Use fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinses with the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance to help prevent tooth decay.

*Eat a balanced diet for good general health.

*Schedule regular dental visits.
