  2. Questions for the class • How does ice erosion change the world? • What is the difference between alpine and continental glaciers?

  3. GLACIERS- Rivers of Ice • Alpine glaciers Continental glaciers cover over continents they are huge on stretches across most of Antarctica. That ice sheet is 1 and ½ times bigger the United States. • Continental Glaciers cover over continents they are huge on stretches across most of Antarctica.   4. Glaciers on the Move • Glaciers on the move. Thick glaciers move faster then thin glaciers. Also the stepper the slope is the faster the glacier moves. • Glaciers move 2 ways by sliding and flowing. Glaciers move by the weight of the glaciers makes the bottom melt, as the water at the bottom makes the glacier slide down of flow down. • Glacier movement is affected by the climate as well. About 10000 years ago a continental glacier covered most of North America.

  5. Types of Glacier Effects • Glaciers can carve many different types of mountains and sometimes shape and flatten the landscape in many different ways. EXAMPLES: • U shaped valleys are made by when glaciers eat away at v-shaped river to turn it into a u-shaped valley • Hanging Valleys

  6. Landforms Carved by Glaciers Cirques Hanging Valleys Horns Glaciers can carve many different types of mountains and sometimes shape and flatten the landscape in many different ways. Here are some types of ways that glaciers can shape mountains and the landscape. Arêtes U shaped valleys

  7. Types of Glacial Deposits Glacial Drift- Rock material carried and deposited by glaciers. Till- Unsorted rock material that is deposited directly by a melting glacier. Stratified Drift- A glacial deposit that has been sorted and layered by the actions of streams and meltwater.

Till Deposits • As a glacier starts to melt it loses all the material it is carrying. • Glacial drift is divided into two parts: till and stratified drift. • Till deposits • Here unsorted means that the till is made up of several different sizes. • When the glacier gets hot it melts, so when it melts , the unsorted material is deposited on the surface of the ground.

  9. Moraines • The Most frequent till deposits are moraines. • There are many different types of moraines. • There created when glaciers carry material to the front of and along the sides of the ice. • Moraines usually form ridges along the edges of the glaciers

  10. Types of Moraines • Lateral moraines form on side of glacier • Ground moraines form from unsorted materials left beneath a glacier • Medial morainesform when valley glaciers with lateral moraines meet • Terminal moraines form when the sediment is dropped at the front of the glacier.

Also, they are wider and straighter. Continental glaciers flatten and smooth a patch of land.
