  3. Materials Characterization • Our lab tests different materials for their durability. • The tests include tensile (pulling), compression (pushing), shear (sliding) and fatigue (both pulling and pushing.)

  4. Project • We wanted a project that would include both materials testing with something hands-on that we could build.

  5. Polycarbonate • Polycarbonate is a transparent plastic used for building with high heat resistance and impact strength.

  6. Adhesives...

  7. Photo-elastic Stress • With a photo-elastic stress test, you can see the stress patterns in polycarbonate through two polarized filters (one on either side.)

  8. Methylene Chloride • Is a chemical compound widely used as a solvent for organic materials. • It is mainly used as a paint stripper. • Used specifically for bonding acrylics.

  9. Cyanoacrylate • Is the generic name for adhesives like Powerbond and Superglue. • The presence of moisture causes the glue to set, as such it has been used effectively in suture-less surgery.

  10. Joint Testing • We wanted to test to see which adhesive would hold up the best in a shear test.

  12. Joint Testing Numero Dos • We constructed shear test samples, three of each superglue and methylene chloride.

  13. Result • One ‘leg’ of the test samples would usually break off before the joint failed. • Contrary to what we had thought, the superglue held better than the methylene chloride.

  14. Bridges Galore! • We built two bridges- one using the cyanoacrylate and one using pegs to secure the pieces.

  18. Breaking • We found that both bridges broke under the same amount of force.

  19. Conclusion • We concluded that even though the bridges broke under the same amount of force, the peg bridge would be better served in practical use because it can bend with wind and varying amounts of stress.
