  1. EOSDIS User survey follow-up Mike Folk, Kent Yang, Elena Pourmal The HDF Group Oct. 17, 2012 Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  2. Outline • Survey comments and our actions • Examples • Tools Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  3. Survey comments for tools MODIS examples Access HDF4/5 via MATLAB Example plots some examples how to work with some datasets as MODIS ….. Maybe some examples in MATLAB, NCL or GrADS. It would be very helpful to have codes available to public to read specific data format. Matlab codes for example to read HDF4 or HDF5. Clear, COMPLETE examples of how to recreate the various plots and figures on the websites. Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  4. Our actions • Promote our comprehensive example page at hdfeos.org/zoo • What we currently do • Promote them at hdfeos.org • Make brochures and distribute them at conferences and meetings • What we plan to do • Work with ESDIS staff to promote the service • Create a NASA brochure? Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  5. Survey comments for tools (I) • GeoTIFF related • A batch tool that converts HDF files to GeoTIFF • A tool that reads HDF files and writes the contents in GeoTIFF format, with possibility of choosing different projections Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  6. Proposed Actions to GeoTIFF • Write a white paper to evaluate GeoTiFF support • HDF products include both ESDIS products and JPSS HDF5 products. • Send the paper to ESDIS and JPSS stakeholders for suggestions • Then come up with a follow-up plan • Current status: • Start reading the previous investigation report Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  7. Survey comments for tools (II) • General edit, export, import, convert • It is good to have a reliable tool for HDF-EOS, HDF4 and HDF5 data, which can handle and even edit, export, import and convert the HDF's to and from other formats. • Easy-to-use visualization tools, or file conversion tools (HDF to ASCII)…… Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  8. Proposed Actions for General edit etc. tool • We are organizing information about different formats and tools and are evaluating the current status of available functionalities. • We will also provide examples for users to follow easily. • We will then find a way to promote the information. Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  9. Survey comments for tools (III) • HDF to netCDF • Format Conversion (HDF to netCDF) • What we proposed • Promote HDF4/EOS2 to netCDF-CF conversion toolkit. • Write a white paper • Support conversion from HDF5/HDF-EOS5 to netCDF-CF. • Current status • We created a brochure that includes the information about the HDF4/EOS2 to netCDF-CF conversion toolkit. Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS

  10. Survey comments for tools (IV) • Read HDF-EOS from R • We want to know: how important is support for HDF (EOS) and HDF5 (EOS) in R Annual HDF Briefing to ESDIS
