The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • World trends of adopting Sustainable Development principles by the productive sectors of major environmental impacts and nature resources dependency; • the Building Industry in Brazil is shifting rapidly to embody proceedings of energy efficiency, consumption reducing and reuse of water, green materials adoption and recycling and controlling of waste.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • The green certification sector is increasing due to the settling of the Green Building Council in Brazil and in parallel the adoption of the French System “Haute Qualité Environnementale” for the Brazilian homonymous –AQUA. • GBC Brazil is now processing 140 buildings for LEED labeling all over the country.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • The Brazilian Governmental Master Acceleration Growing Plan (PAC - Plano de Aceleração do Crescimento) – focused in reducing the low income housing deficit of the whole country estimated in 8 millions units – has given the political and technical support to the Federal Economic Bank (CEF - Caixa Economica Federal ) – the Brazilian bank of housing and construction sector financing – on its federal financing resources managering skills, to launch the green seal “Blue House”(Casa Azul); it aims to stimulate the developers market interested in investing and developing affordable housing for the low income population.

  4. The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • Rio the Janeiro Mayor was the first in Brazil to join the CEF initiative to access the Federal PAC Program. • It counts now 250.000 families on the chart list with credit capacity guaranteed by CEF.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • Eight amongst of the major brazilian developer companies, as WTorres, Odebrecht/Bairro Novo, Queiroz Galvão, RJZ Cyrella, CHL, Rossi, Direcional e MRV, have their portfolium of projects and landbanks assured, to respond to more than 40.000 affordable housing units signalized for the biennial 2009-2010. Cyrella, as an example, is raising more than 1 Billion Reais on the International Market, to invest on the PAC program.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • Some positive factors are contributing for the consolidation of the Sustainable Building Market in a relevant way in Brazil as: • the creation of the Brazilian Council for the Sustainable Construction (CBCS) in São Paulo, • the implementation of government laws and norms, • the intense academic production, • the increasing number of experts an consultants, and, • the strong demands by concerned consumers for having more ecological houses.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • The Brazilian Chamber of the Building Construction – CBIC - just launched a program to stimulate the adoption of innovative industrialized technologies for public works, to reduce the taxes over green materials, to enhance capacity building for operators, and to embody sustainable parameters by the regulatory norms, national and local levels.

The Momentum of the Sustainable Construction in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro • In Rio de Janeiro, the opportunities are specially inviting. • The Brazilian Sustainable Construction Network (Rede Construção Sustentável) is been launched to occupy a lack in the local market, through the offering of qualified information, capacity building and training, green technologies data bank, and consultancy for green building businesses in this sector, independently of the typology of the enterprises and the social range level to which the buildings are addressed.
