  2. Preterit: Beginning or end of an event • El primer día del viaje, llovió. • Al fin del año, nosregaló el jefe un boleto de la lotería.

  3. Pretérito: to limit time • Viví en México por un año.

  4. Pretérito: a series of completed actions • Me levanté, me lavé y salícorriendoparallegar al autobús.

  5. Pretérito: Summarize opinions, attitudes and beliefs • Me parecióridículo la idea de cambiar el horario.

  6. Pretérito: For sudden emotional reactions, interrruptions and changes. • 1. Ayer Alonzo se enojó de repente y no séporqué. • Llovíapor la nochecuandocayó el árbol. • Ella fue de la casa sin dejarme un recado.

  7. Pretérito: Snapshots • Can you visualize a snapshot…action frozen? • Alcé el rifle y disparó. El osocayó.

  8. Pretérito: Action on a stage • If you think of the imperfect as the background (little action much description), then the preterit is the action (you could snap a shot of the action and see what was done). • Era ya fines de junio y lasovejassubieron la sierra.

  9. Imperfecto: • Background information • Think of a stage set, the scenery, the way things were and are still. • Hacíafrío y estabanublado la tormentaempezaba.

  10. Imperfecto • No emphasis on beginning or end. • The action is in progress. • Iban a la sierra. Las ovejaspastabano dormían.

  11. Imperfecto • Repeated actions or habits • (Look for a plural time phrase) • Siemprealmorzábamos en el mismo café. • Los domingosdesayunábamostemprano en un café chiquito.

  12. Imperfecto • Pure description (no action) of the past…people, opinions, beliefs • Cuando era niño, nuestra casa era pequeña, pero mi hermano y yocreíamosque era la casa perfecta paranosotros.

  13. Imperfecto • To say what you were going to do. • All forms of iba + infinitive • Iba a salir a las dos.

  14. Imperfecto • Age in the past • Teníadiezañoscuando la guerraempezó.

  15. Imperfecto • Look for these time expressions: • A menudo • Con frecuencia • Mientras • Todo el tiempo • Todos los días • Siempre • Any plural with days of week, months etc…

  16. Hubo or Había • Haber is irregular and HAY meaning there is, there are is the only verb in Spanish that can be singular or plural! • Hay in the preterit is HUBO • Hay in the imperfect is HABÍA

  17. Hubo and Había • Use hubo for sudden changes. • Estabatranquilo en la sierra cuando de repentehubounatormenta con relámpagos y trueno. • It was calm in the mountains when suddenly there was (big change) a thunderstorm with lightning.

  18. Habíacuatrojóvenes en la sierra conmigo. • There were four young people in the mountains with me. • Nothing sudden. There were for an undisclosed amount of time, four people with me and they might still be with me. (No change, no suddenness)

  19. 7 verbs to watch • Depending on the focus you want, preterit or imperfect, the following seven verbs will have a different meaning in English. • Just choosing preterit or imperfect will bring different meaning to them.
