  1. Greater Than and Less Than Unit of Study 3: Comparing Numbers to 5 Global Concept Guide: 2 of 3

  2. Days 5-8 Greater Than and Less Than • Throughout this unit it is important that students have access to hands on manipulatives, not just drawings. Students will gain a greater understanding of comparing sets when they are able to add and take away from their models to see how they can change.

  3. Students should be able to look at two sets and determine which set is greater and which set is less. Greater Than and Less Than

  4. Greater Than and Less Than Which set is greater the blue or red? This can be a misconception for students when size is a factor. It is important for students to understand that quantity is different than size. Vocabulary • It is important that students are exposed to the appropriate vocabulary. Vocabulary that should be used: greater than less than more fewer

  5. Math Centers Many items found around the classroom can be used by students to make and compare sets that are greater and fewer. Have students recognize the written numeral represents the quantity of a number and determine from there which is greater or less. • Math centers for greater than and less than numbers to 5 should be hands on. Dominoes can be used to determine which side is greater and less.

  6. Math Notebook Entries: • There are two frogs on a log. Some more frogs come along but there are less than 5. How many frogs could there be? • Draw an apple tree with more than 2 but less than 5 apples. How many apples did you draw? • Sally had more than 2 items but less than 4 items on her lunch tray. Draw a picture of Sally’s tray. How many items does she have? • I ate more than 1 strawberry, but less than 5. Draw how many strawberries I might have eaten. Write the number.

  7. Enrich and Re-teach greater than: less Tthan: These can be found in the Go Math TE pgs. 65B and 69B

  8. Literacy Connections: • Mabel’s Place – comparing numbers through greater than and less than 5. Found in the Go Math Grab and Go Center Kit.
