  4. Why Ask Questions? • Questions should always be PURPOSE driven • The purpose will influence the types of questions asked by teacher • Questions asked should be used to assess learning

Why Ask Questions? • Excite interest or curiosity • Direct pupil thinking in a particular way • Focus attention on a topic • Control behavior of the class or individuals • Encourage pupils to be actively engaged in learning • Challenge pupils • Review pupils’ learning • Reinforce learnt material • Structure or guide the learning of a task (promotes differentiation) • Obtain feedback on teaching • Indentify gaps in pupils’ learning • Provide opportunities for pupil learning through discussion • Assess pupils • Encourage reflection on learning • Gain feedback from pupils about teaching • Revision of content • Help pupils clarify their understandings • Evaluation purposes • Model questioning and thinking • Engage pupils in a particular type of thinking (e.g. critical, creative or reflective, metacognition) • Help pupils make connections • Spark further questions • Motivate pupil inquiries • Reinforce 21st century skills

  7. How Can Quality Questioning Transform The Classroom? Teachers ask too many questions; focus should be on quality questions.

  8. Focus Question Why is it important to teach STUDENTS the skills of quality questioning?

  9. WHAT DO WE TEACH KIDS? • We teach kids to answer! • We don’t teach them to question. • Once a question is answered, the inquiry process STOPS!

  10. WHY TEACH QUESTIONING? • Asking questions, not just answering them, is a life support skill. • It is connected to decision making and problem solving. • There is more thinking and learning in asking questions than in answering them. • The question is more important than the answer.

Gap Between Research & Practice • Studies conducted for well over 100 years about teachers’ use of questioning strategies show that there has been very little change in classroom practice, related to questioning, over all those years. • With regard to that research finding, we are going to do some deeper investigating into why this is.

  12. Quality Questions Are Seldom By Chance Research reports that 75 to 80 percent of the questions posed in both elementary and secondary classrooms are at the recall or memory level. In your opinion, what are the two or three most important factors contributing to this situation?

Why do you think teachers allow students so little time to begin their responses? Suggest two or three possible explanations.

  29. Infamous “One Right” Answer • Most questions that teachers ask have one right answer. Even if the questions have more that one possible answer, teachers usually have just one particular answer in mind. They don’t want to hear what you think; they just want to hear their answer. – High School Senior

Inviting Student Elaboration • How did you decide that? • How did you arrive at that? • Elaborate for others in the class so they can check their thinking. • What made you think of that? • Tell us about the procedure you used. • Can you justify that? • What steps did you use to arrive at this solution? • Tell us in “eighth-grade” language. • What evidence can you offer to support this point of view? • Can you think of another way of attacking this problem?

Engaging the Silent Two-Thirds in Learning & Thinking Research reports that teachers frequently give a student the answer to a question that the student does not answer correctly or immediately. Can you suggest two or three reasons why many teachers provide the answer rather than attempt to elicit a correct response from the student?

Conversational Moves • Ask a question or make a comment that shows you are interested in what another person has said. • Ask a question or make a comment that encourages someone else to elaborate on something that person has said. • Make a comment that underscores a link between two people’s contributions. Make this link explicit in your comment. • Use body language (in a slightly exaggerated way) to show interest in what different speakers are saying. • Make a comment indicating that you found another person’s ideas interesting or useful. Be specific as to why this was the case. H

  36. Conversational Moves • Contribute something that builds on or springs from what someone else has said. Be explicit about the way you are building on someone else’s thoughts. • Make a comment that at least partly paraphrases a point someone has already made. • At an appropriate moment, ask the group for a minute’s silence to slow the pace of conversation and give you and others time to think. • Find a way to express appreciation for the enlightenment you have gained from the discussion. Try to be specific about what it was that helped you understand something better. • Disagree with someone in a respectful and constructive way. H

Effective Active Listening Behaviors • Eye Contact • Looking directly at the speaker and maintaining eye contact • Facial Expressions • Using a variety of appropriate facial expressions, such as smiling or demonstrating surprise or excitement • Body Posture • Using gestures such as hand signals; maintaining body posture that signifies openness to students’ ideas • Physical Distance • Adjusting one’s position in the classroom according to one’s condition of instruction; for example, moving closer to a student who is speaking (or to a student who is less engaged) •  Silence • Being quiet while a student is speaking – not interrupting; honoring wait time after a student stops speaking • Verbal Acknowledgements • Using brief, appropriate verbal acknowledgements such as a “go ahead,” “yes,” or “I understand” • Subsummaries • Restating or paraphrasing the main ideas presented by students during lengthy discussions H

  39. Teaching Students to Generate Questions Research reports that students ask less than five percent of the questions in both elementary and secondary classrooms. Why do students initiate so few questions? Offer two or three hypotheses.

  42. Reality • The classic concept of learning is that it occurs when the teacher asks the questions and the students can answer them, but the REALITY is that learning does not occur until the learner needs to know and can formulate the question for himself. - Morgan & Saxon (1994, p. 75)
