Sci-Fi Opening scene: • The Matrix • Narrative • Trying to stay secretive as they are watching someone to see if they are the ‘one’, if caught there may be bad consequences. • Target Audience • All genders • Young adults-mid thirties- looks as if a lot of technology is involved due to the coding in the scene. This is associated with the younger generation as technology is fairly new. • All races • Genre of the film set up in the first sequence • Sci-Fi- diegetic electronic sound. • Action- low angle of police officer kicking down of the door near the end of the opening scene signifies to the audience that there will be some action.
Characters • Introduced to two people (male and female) talking to each other over the phone. • We get the impression that what they are secretive and cautious by the way they are being very uptight over the phone. • Right at the end of the scene we see a woman who has been caught by the police which signifies they are doing something they shouldn’t be. • Very dramatic non-diegetic sound leading up to the reveal of the title ‘The Matrix’, which builds tension. • Slow zoom into de-coded number, draws focus to the coding. • I think this opening scene is effective as you understand the secrecy of what is going on, but you don’t have a real idea of what is going to happen.
