  1. Opening Scene Evaluation

  2. What did the opening scenes all have in common? • All the opening scenes were aimed at a male audience except for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 • Even if briefly, characters were presented in each of the opening scenes. • The war, action and sci-fi genres all gave a sense that there would be some action involved in the film.

  3. Any scenes that were particularly different from the others? • Dunkirk was the only opening scene that didn’t have non-diegetic sound. • The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 opening scene was they only scene that felt lighthearted and fun, all the others felt more serious and darker.

  4. The most successful opening scene • I think the most successful scene was the The Lighthouse because I think it gives subtle sounds to make you feel uneasy giving a sense of what the film, will be like but not everything is given away and therefore, still quite mysterious. The mise-en-scene, like the low-key lighting and dark costumes and the camera work of the film being filmed in black and white connotes a dark atmosphere which is really giving the audience a clear sense of genre (horror).

  5. The least successful opening scene • I think the least successful opening scene was Shutter Island because although the scene was successful by establishing the genre in the opening scene using non-diegetic music which gave off a classic thriller feel and the mystery of not knowing much about the character making the audience feel uncomfortable, I don’t think there was enough detail too hook the audience making them want to watch further.
