  2. History Taking • Presenting complaint (Clarify what you are told) • History of presenting complaint • Systems review • Past Medical History • Birth History • Medications • Allergies • Immunisations • Developmental History • Social History & Family History

  3. History Taking (2) • Practice!!!!! • Get exposure on the wards • Time yourselves • Spend time in CED and clinics. Ask to present and discuss.

  4. History Taking (3) Systems review Feeding General Demeanour Wet nappies Bowel habit Vomiting Coryzal symptoms

History Taking (4)PMHx & Birth History Pregnancy and antenatal problems Mode of delivery Timing of delivery (term/preterm) Condition at delivery (SCBU) Previous illnesses or admissions Regular GP attendances Other professionals involved in care Medications – what are they for Allergies & clarification

  6. History Taking (5)Development Ask about parental concerns Know basic milestones Gross motor Fine motor & vision Speech and language Social Hearing & vision Is this relevant to medical issues? Get exposure to children – and watch them

  7. History Taking (6)Social and Family History Who does the child live with Care givers Additional pressures on family Other children with medical problems or related issues Social work input Construct a family tree Smoking, pets

Examination (2) • Look around the room & surroundings • Look at the child (!) • Do as much as you can before approaching • Leave with parents • Get your knees dirty • Interaction with child throughout exam • Observe • Do what you can, when you can • Generally systems based. • Some “baby checks” • Developmental assessments • Don’t forget ENT
