  1. Telescopes http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~u11aw4/px2013/telescopes.jpg

  2. Is an instrument that collects light and concentrates it for better observation http://www.astrosurf.com/re/king_039.jpg http://www.meade.com/catalog/images/small_telescopes_section.jpg Telescope

  3. Optical • Refracting • Reflecting Types of Telescopes

  4. Optical • 2 Lenses • objective lens that collects light and forms and image at the back of telescope • 2nd lens is in the eyepiece and it magnifies the image produced by the objective lens http://www.gb.nrao.edu/~sheather/ctw%20meeting/optical%20telescope.jpg

  5. Refracting • Uses a set of lenses to gather and focus light • The curved objective lens in this telescope bends light that passes through it and focuses the light to be magnified by the eyepiece http://auto-accessories.allbuynow.com/p/70/images/meade-ds2080lnt-80mm31-achromatic-refracting-go-to-telescope-with-lnt-auto-align-amp-autostar.jpg

  6. Reflecting • Uses curved mirrors to gather and focus light • Has a focal point • The point on the axis of the mirror or lens through which parallel light rays are focused http://www.easytorecall.com/pictures/reflecting.jpg

  7. Refracting Reflecting • Disadvantage Size is limited by the size of the objective lens If the curved lens is too large the glass sags under own weight and distorts image • Advantages Mirrors can be very large so they gather more light than Refracting Scientist and most professional astronomers prefer this one Advantages and Disadvantages

  8. Refracting and Reflecting

  9. Provides cleared images of objects deep in space Hubble Space Telescope

  10. Electromagnetic Spectrum • Electromagnetic Radiation • Radio Telescopes Non Optical Telescopes

  11. Electromagnetic Spectrum Made of all of the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/images/radiationspectrum.jpg

  12. Earth’s atmosphere blocks most electromagnetic radiation which is all forms of energy that travel through space as waves Electromagnetic Radiation

  13. Radio Telescopes Receive and focus radio waves. Can link radio telescopes together to form large ones. Ex: Very Large Array Near Socorro, New Mexico http://petulina.euweb.cz/obrazky/17/radio_telescopes.jpg
