  7. What is Our Mission? The mission of the NWS Office at the FAA Academy is to: “Keep pilots out of harms way by supporting the FAA” 1. Provide weather training for FAA Air Traffic Controllers 2. Administer NWS Certification exams for Pilot Weather Briefers and Tower Visibility Observers 3. Administer quality assurance for Pilot Weather Briefing Program 4. Write reference material for the aviation community

  8. What Do We Do? Classroom Training • FAA Academy Residence Courses • Air Traffic Basics - 26 hours of weather training for newly hired Air Traffic Controllers • Approximately 1,400 students per year • Air Traffic Controller Tower Visibility (4 hours) - Required to become certified to take tower visibility observations • Approximately 500 students per year

  9. What Do We Do? New Course for En Route Controllers • Collaboration between the FAA Air Traffic Training Division and NWS/FAA Academy • Major development completed • Focus on en route hazards (e.g., thunderstorms, turbulence, icing) • Application of pertinent weather information to en route air traffic control decision-making

  10. What Do We Do? Computer-Based Training Courses • Subject-matter experts for FAA Computer-Based Training (CBT) courses: • Limited Aviation Weather Reporting Station (LAWRS) • Basic Aviation Weather • Weather Graphics Interpretation • Adverse Weather • Low-Level Wind Shear/Microburst Alerts • WSR-88D Radar Image Interpretation • Weather Satellite Data Interpretation

  11. What Do We Do? Pilot Weather Briefing: Certification • Issue "Certificate of Authority” for Pre-Flight Pilot Weather Briefing (approximately 100 in past year) • Briefer candidate must successfully pass the following certification examinations: 1.Weather Analysis (online) 2. Satellite (online) 3. WSR-88D Weather Radar (online) 4. Practical (oral) Pilot Weather Briefing (phone)

  12. What Do We Do? Pilot Weather Briefing: Quality Assurance • Random/scheduled Pre-Flight practical pilot weather briefing proficiency checks (phone) • Approximately 210 in the past year

  13. What Do We Do? En Route Flight Advisory Service (EFAS) Certification • Issue “Certificate of Authority” for En Route Flight Advisory Service (EFAS) Pilot Weather Briefing • Approximately 100 in the past year • Briefer candidate must successfully pass the following EFAS certification examinations: 1. EFAS Weather Analysis (online) 2. Practical (oral) EFAS Weather Briefing (phone)

  14. What Do We Do? Tower Visibility Certification • Issue a “Tower Visibility Observers Certificate” to ATC personnel when they successfully pass the Tower Visibility Certification written examination. • Approximately 1,500 in the past year

  15. What Do We Do? Maintain Certification Databases • Pilot Weather Briefing (approximately 1,000 briefers) • Pre-flight and EFAS • Tower Visibility (approximately 6,000 observers)
