  6. Web Site and Homepage • The WWW consists of a large number of connected web sites • A web site is a group of connected web pages • The linkage between web pages is known as Hyperlink • The first web page in a web site is known as Homepage

  7. HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) • Web pages are written with HTML • Files written with HTML will be suffixed by .htm or .html

  8. HTTP and FTP Hypertext • Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a type of Protocol • Define how messages are formatted and transmitted between servers and browsers • Use http:// to denote a hyper-text interfaced web page • File transmission Protocol (FTP) is another type of protocol • For the transmission of files • Use ftp:// to denote a FTP interfaced web page • The transmission of FTP is faster than HTTP

  9. Use URL (Universal Resource Locator) • Protocol • Address • Path • In the format protocol://address/path • e.g. http://www.netscape.com/netcenter/cool.html?cp=hom12scul • path is not essential

  10. Hyperlink and Hypertext • Hyperlink is the linkage point to another web page • Hypertext is the word(s) which contain the hyperlink • Hypertext will change color after the linked page has been browsed

  11. Shareware and Freeware • Shareware is software that may be downloaded from the internet for trial • User need to pay after the period of trial if he want to continue the usage • Freeware is software that may be downloaded from the internet and is free to use

  12. Browse the Web Site • http://www.vtc.edu.hk • http://www.cuhk.edu.hk • http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/index.html • http://www.ied.edu.hk • http://cwis.polyu.edu.hk • http://www.oli.hk • http://www.hku.hk

  13. Close " Netscape” • Select “file” • Select “exit” • Closing of browser not equal to disconnecting the network

  14. Using Microsoft IE • Microsoft Internet Explorer • User interface is similar to that of MS Office

  15. Use the History List • History list is used to record the browsed web site of the user • For Netscape: • Select “Communicator” • Select “Tools” • Select “History” • Double-click the web site (short-cut : Ctrl+H)

  16. Use the Bookmark (1) • Add bookmark • For Netscape: • Go to the web page • Select “Communicator” • Select “Bookmarks” • Select “Add Bookmark” • The address will be added to the bookmark

  17. Use the Bookmark (2) • Edit bookmark • Select “Communicator” • Select “Bookmarks” • Select “Edit Bookmarks”

  18. Practical Exercise • Please demonstrate that you are able to browse the homepage of the Hong Kong SAR Government: • http://www.info.gov.hk • Then find out what is the current weather or traffic report.

  20. Internet Search Engine • Netscape • Excite • Infoseek • Lycos • LookSmart • News Search • Alta vista • Yahoo!

  21. Searching by Keyword • Start Netscape • Press “search” • Enter the keyword to be searched • A number of web sites related to the keyword will be listed • Select any of the sites

  22. Searching by Catalog • Select one search engine and enter the site • Select one of the catalogues • Select one of the sub-catalogues and so on

  23. Searching Selected Area • Search by keyword and search by catalogue is done on www • Select particular area to narrow down the area to be searched
