The 2ndEpistle to Timothy Date and Location of Writing: + The Apostle Paul wrote the Epistle after he was arrested and put in prison for the second time in Rome, around 67 A.D.:  “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner” (2 Timothy 1:8) “The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me” (2 Timothy 1:16-17)

  3. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy Characteristic Points about the Epistle: I. This is the last epistle written by our teacher the Apostle Paul while imprisoned, being aware that his end is near: “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering” (2 Timothy 4:6) 1. The epistle is considered his last will and testimony from an apostolic revered father to his son in the Lord, after a faithful struggle in ministry. 2. It has a historical importance, for it points to the period of the life of the Apostle Paul post his first imprisonment in Rome. 3. In this farewell epistle, we see St. Paul, the great evangelist, ready to face death with the spirit of martyrdom.

Looking back, the Apostle recounts the mercies of God and His many cares in the darkest circumstances: “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Looking to the future, we see that peace and joy fill his soul with happiness and hope: “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His kingdom” (2 Timothy 4:18) II. He is now persecuted by Rome because of the belief of many throughout the whole Roman Empire: “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained” (2 Timothy 2:8-9) 2. Virtually totally abandoned by all his friends from Asia, except for Onesiphorus, to whom St. Paul calls for God’s mercy: “This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes” (2 Timothy 1:15)

He anticipates his execution: “And the time of my departure is at hand” (2 Timothy 4:6) 4. His friends who were with him in his 1st imprisonment in Rome did not remain with him: “For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica – Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia” (2 Timothy 4:10)

It appears that St. Paul was prosecuted more than once during this last imprisonment in Rome, and that he wrote this epistle after all prosecutions ended and before his martyrdom: “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me” (2 Timothy 4:16) III. This epistle has its personal characteristics more than the other pastoral epistles, namely the 1st epistle to Timothy and the epistle to Titus:

The 2ndEpistle to Timothy The epistle revolve around Timothy, the faithful companion of St. Paul, who needed encouragement in his ministry to face the difficulties imposed on him by the false teachings of the group of heretics in the Church at Ephesus, and thus he may complete the ministry of the Apostle Paul. The Purpose of Writing the Epistle: I. St. Paul was aware that his end was near, thus he sent to Timothy, asking him to hasten to come to Rome and bring St. Mark with him: “Be diligent to come to me quickly… Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry” (2 Timothy 4:9,11) II. As he was not certain that Timothy will make it on time to Rome…

Thanksgiving to God for Timothy: “I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also” (2 Timothy 1:3-5)

Exhortation to Timothy for perseverance: “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands” (2 Timothy 1:6) “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7) “But share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1:8-9)

Perseverance in Fighting False Teachings and Heresies: (Chs. 2-4) St. Paul exhorts Timothy to walk in a certain way in order to hold on to the truth and expose the doctrinal errors:

Position the servant of the Gospel must take to combat the false teachers: “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15) “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: The Lord knows those who are His, and, let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19) “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20-21)
