  1. The Second Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy

  2. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy Date and Location of Writing: + The Apostle Paul wrote the Epistle after he was arrested and put in prison for the second time in Rome, around 67 A.D.:  “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner” (2 Timothy 1:8) “The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me” (2 Timothy 1:16-17)

  3. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy Characteristic Points about the Epistle: I. This is the last epistle written by our teacher the Apostle Paul while imprisoned, being aware that his end is near: “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering” (2 Timothy 4:6) 1. The epistle is considered his last will and testimony from an apostolic revered father to his son in the Lord, after a faithful struggle in ministry. 2. It has a historical importance, for it points to the period of the life of the Apostle Paul post his first imprisonment in Rome. 3. In this farewell epistle, we see St. Paul, the great evangelist, ready to face death with the spirit of martyrdom.

  4. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 4. Looking back, the Apostle recounts the mercies of God and His many cares in the darkest circumstances: “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion” (2 Timothy 4:17) 5. Looking to the future, we see that peace and joy fill his soul with happiness and hope: “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His kingdom” (2 Timothy 4:18) II. The conditions of this imprisonment differ from those of the 1st …

  5. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy imprisonment where he wrote the four captivity epistles: 1. He is now persecuted by Rome because of the belief of many throughout the whole Roman Empire: “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained” (2 Timothy 2:8-9) 2. Virtually totally abandoned by all his friends from Asia, except for Onesiphorus, to whom St. Paul calls for God’s mercy: “This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes” (2 Timothy 1:15)

  6. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy “The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day —and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus” (2 Timothy 1:18) 3. He anticipates his execution: “And the time of my departure is at hand” (2 Timothy 4:6) 4. His friends who were with him in his 1st imprisonment in Rome did not remain with him: “For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica – Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia” (2 Timothy 4:10)

  7. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 5. However, many met around him: “Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren” (2 Timothy 4:21) 6. It appears that St. Paul was prosecuted more than once during this last imprisonment in Rome, and that he wrote this epistle after all prosecutions ended and before his martyrdom: “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me” (2 Timothy 4:16) III. This epistle has its personal characteristics more than the other pastoral epistles, namely the 1st epistle to Timothy and the epistle to Titus:

  8. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy The epistle revolve around Timothy, the faithful companion of St. Paul, who needed encouragement in his ministry to face the difficulties imposed on him by the false teachings of the group of heretics in the Church at Ephesus, and thus he may complete the ministry of the Apostle Paul. The Purpose of Writing the Epistle: I. St. Paul was aware that his end was near, thus he sent to Timothy, asking him to hasten to come to Rome and bring St. Mark with him: “Be diligent to come to me quickly… Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry” (2 Timothy 4:9,11) II. As he was not certain that Timothy will make it on time to Rome…

  9. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy before his death, St. Paul included in the epistle many exhortations, which he wished to convey to Timothy: 1. Hold fast to sound words: “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, infaith and love which are in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13) 2. Endure hardship as a good soldier to the Lord Jesus Christ: “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3) 3. To avoid false teachings: “But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more…

  10. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy ungodliness” (2 Timothy 2:16) 4. Not to quarrel, but be gentle, patient and able to teach: “And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient” (2 Timothy 2:24) 5. Fulfill his ministry: “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5) III. Challenges from false teachers and heretics that the Church in…

  11. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy Ephesus was exposed to made St. Paul feel her need for instructions and admonitions: “Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers” (2 Timothy 2:14) “And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some” (2 Timothy 2:17-18) “And they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:4)

  12. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy IV. Exhorting the Church, for she was under the pressure of persecution: “Share with me the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8) “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12) Contents: I. Introduction: (Ch. 1) “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, a beloved son” (2 Timothy 1:1-2)

  13. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, a beloved son” (2 Timothy 1:1-2) II. Perseverance Without Fear, for the Gospel’s Sake: (Chs. 1-2) St. Paul exhorts Timothy to stir up his zeal for the Gospel and to remain a faithful believer in Jesus Christ: 1. Thanksgiving to God for Timothy: “I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also” (2 Timothy 1:3-5)

  14. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 2. Exhortation to Timothy for perseverance: “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands” (2 Timothy 1:6) “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7) “But share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1:8-9)

  15. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy “For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12) “That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us” (2 Timothy 1:14) 3. The minister of the Gospel must serve with endurance and patience, and without obsession with the matters of life and the world: “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:1) “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses,…

  16. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2) “No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier” (2 Timothy 2:4) “And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5) “Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things” (2 Timothy 2:7) “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also…

  17. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Timothy 2:10) 4. Future consequences to the Christian ministers: “This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:11-13) III. Perseverance in Fighting False Teachings and Heresies: (Chs. 2-4) St. Paul exhorts Timothy to walk in a certain way in order to hold on to the truth and expose the doctrinal errors:

  18. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 1. Position the servant of the Gospel must take to combat the false teachers: “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15) “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: The Lord knows those who are His, and, let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19) “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20-21)

  19. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 2. Instructions to Timothy to define his behavior and his pattern with regard to the believers and to the false teachers: “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22) “But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife” (2 Timothy 2:23) “In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:25-26)

  20. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy 3. Difficult Times and Perils: “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!… but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all” (2 Timothy 3:1-5,9) 4. Be Strong in the Faith: “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which…

And out of them all the Lord delivered me” (2 Timothy 3:10-11) “But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13) “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them” (2 Timothy 3:14) “And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15)

  22. The 2ndEpistle to Timothy “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) 5. Preach the Word: “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2) IV. Concluding Remarks: (Ch. 4) 1.
