  1. “ The Power of Scaffolding ” through ……. M U S I C ! Lesson Plan by Antonio DeJesus subject: Music Grade levels: 6-8th 4/24/01

  2. Objectives: • students will learn to count and keep time, while playing a Latin percussion instrument. • The lesson is made so that students have an examples of counting and keeping time.

  3. Materials: • Claves - two set of sticks played together. • Cowbell- a metal bell with an opening. • Your hands - say no more. • Handout -which will describe the steps.

  4. Procedures: • Students will be introduced to the various instruments. • A short demonstration will be given with each instrument. • As each instrument is introduced, a rhythmic pattern is introduced and beats will be counted.

  5. This lesson is designed for students who have some and no knowledge of music and I am building on that knowledge. I will explain that: • The first beat is always the strongest. • The count is steady and repetitious. • There are rhythmic patterns for each.

  6. Continue…….. • After demonstrating the rhythmic pattern for each each instrument, I will ask students to try and play it. • The rhythmic pattern is on the handout sheet. • I will have them play the rhythm on each instrument. • I will then sing and play the guitar while the students play these rhythm. • Sing along is optional.

  7. Closure: • I will explain to students that the beat used when playing an instrument is more or less the same as the beat they follow or feel when dancing to music. • They can actually feel the beat.

  8. Follow up….. I will build on what they’ve learned by testing and assigning them homework.
