  1. Water Heater Repair – Fixing Discolored and Smelly Water in a Professional Way Most people continue to use their water heaters without having to worry much about its maintenance. This is a big mistake and most people realize it when things actually go wrong. Something that can be quite annoying is to get discolored, smelly water whenever you turn on the faucet. Working with someone who knows everything about water heater repair may help identify the root cause and fix it professionally, but you can take other steps too to manage the problem. A simple solution to correct discolored water is to use a standard filtration system. Discoloration could be due to rust in the water, but a green color could indicate copper pipes corrosion. Whatever the case, you can manage things well by using a filtration system. In situations where filtering does not help much, you may have to hire a professional and have the metal plumbing changed completely. However, you do not usually need to take serious actions when you notice white particles in your water. Generally, the particles are magnesium or calcium that do not cause any harm other than increasing the risk of clogging pipes and drains. Not fixing the issue in a timely manner could lead to a clogged pipe that would require expensive water heater repair. Keep in mind that white particles can usually be removed through filtration, but it may not work when the discoloration is the result of an electric water heater calcifying, which occurs when the magnesium and calcium build up on elements within the electric water heater. If that is the case, you will first have to clean the heating elements. When they cannot be cleaned, you have to think of replacing them. Here is how to proceed:  Always turn off the power to your electric heater. Be sure to use a multi-meter to check all the wires. You have to be sure that the power if off before going any further with water heater repair.  Now, drain the water completely. You can simply attach the garden hose to the drain valve to complete the task.  Once empty, you need to check all the heating elements and clean them thoroughly. You can use a mixture of sodium carbonate and water, or a mixture of water and vinegar may work just fine too. Do not try to clean the elements that look corroded. Even if you clean them properly, they will eventually turn bad, leading to discolored, smelly water. Having those elements replaced is probably your best bet.  Once you have cleaned all the elements, you can simply install them back inside the heater and refill the tank. Turn the power on. It should resolve the issue.

  2. The fact of the matter is that correcting certain issues in a timely manner could prevent costly water heater repair; however, you should not hesitate to talk to a plumber if simple solutions fail to correct the issue.
