  1. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals

  2. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals Fossils Scientists study fossils to learn about plants and animals that lived in prehistoric times. The size of a fossil can help a scientist figure out what type of plant or animal it came from. A scientist finds a dinosaur tooth that is about 3 centimeters long. What is a more precise measurement for the tooth? You can use decimal parts of a centimeter to find out.

  3. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals To answer the question above about dinosaur teeth, use a metric ruler and write your answer as a decimal number of centimeters.

  4. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals

  5. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals From the metric ruler you can see that 2 millimeters is 2 tenths centimeter. The length is about 3 and 2 tenths centimeters.

  6. EXAMPLE 1 Writing Measurements as Decimals From the metric ruler you can see that 2 millimeters is 2 tenths centimeter. The length is about 3 and 2 tenths centimeters. ANSWER The length of the dinosaur tooth is about 3.2 centimeters.
