  3. Games to Help Students Learn Site Words • Bingo: The spots on the bingo board will be site words. Bingo Boards for these site words are included in this lesson plan packet. • Tic Tac Toe: Draw Tic Tac Toe boards on the white board or smart board. Divide the class into two teams. Each team captain will pick a number between 1 through 10. The number closest to teacher number will get to go first. The team member will pick a space and read the word. If it is correct, the team will place an X or an O in the space. It will then be the next team’s turn. This will continue until there is a winner. You can play multiple games until everyone gets a turn.

  4. Erase Relay: Divide the word list into two columns on the board. Divide the class into two teams with lines. Decide which team goes first (rolling a die, flipping a coin, or picking a #). The student at the beginning of the each line will read the first word in their column. If they get it correct, they get to erase it and to the end of the line. If they miss it, the word remains and that person will go to the back of the line. After a turn from one team, it will be the next team’s turn. Whichever team has all of their words erased first wins the relay. • Site Word Scavenger Hunt: Write words on index cards or post-it notes. Place the site words around the room. Some may be easier than others to locate. You may want to be sneaky about some word placement. You can place them on a bind of a book or bulletin board. (See attached Scavenger Hunt Form). You may easily change this form to fit your classroom or to the words that you are currently working on. • www.SpellingCity .com: A great website to help your kids learn and play games on the computer that you are currently working on. This also works great for vocabulary words. You can customize your own list and games that you want them to play. • Site Words Meet and Trade: Each student will have an index card with a word written on it. There will be a time limit to walk around the room and introduce themselves to another student. The student will tell their classmate their word. Once they have told the other student their word, they will trade cards with that person. This will continue until the time has ran out. Give the students at least 10 minutes to do this activity. Maybe give the students a goal on how many people to meet. This would be a great first of the year activity or you could do this activity with another reading or language class.

  10. Teaching to Different Learning Styles Visual Learners • Flashcards with Site Words: You can use the flash cards as a memory game. To do this, you mush make two sets of flash cards. Another idea would be an Old Maid game with flash cards. You would just need one additional card with an Old Maid printed on it. All of these activities could be used in a small group setting or center activities. (See Attached Sheet of Flash Cards). You can edit these flash cards. Some children work better if the background of the paper is a different color other than white. • Worksheets: Have the student circle the site word with the correct spelling. • Highlighters: Have the students use highlighters to highlight words they they are having difficulty reading. Highlight parts of the words that may be giving the students problems. You can use magazines, brochures, or newspapers to do this activity. • Power Point Presentations: Make a power point presentation using the site words matched up with a picture that it represents. The word because would not have a picture but you could have a sentence with because and underline it. • Scavenger Hunt Game: This game is ideal for visual learners. This game would get them engaged in the activity of learning new words. Auditory Learners • Music: Students will listen to music while trying to spell the word. Maybe put words to music. • You Tube: Check You Tube for good videos that put site words to music. Here is one that I have used. http://youtu.be/vgLuzEWf3Zc • Tips on Teaching Auditory Learners: Regulate your voice tone, inflection and body language. Auditory learners also benefit from oral instructions. If the child is having difficulty on a spelling test, you may want to try doing the test orally with them. Auditory learners are much more successful when presented information orally and being able to answer orally as well. • Power Point Presentations: This would also work with auditory learners. For examples, each slide would have the site word. There would also be an audio feature that would play the word so the student could hear it. You could use this in a learning center with headphones.

  11. Teaching to Different Learning Styles Kinesthetic/Tactile Learners • Rubber Stamps: Have the child use rubber stamps to spell out words. This could also be done with stickers. • Raised Lettering on Flash Cards: After printing off the flash cards on cardstock paper, trace each letter in glue. Add glitter or sand to make each word raised. The child should be able to trace the lettering by feeling it. This works great with dyslexic students. • Letter Mix Up: Print off another copy of the flash cards. Cut the letters apart for each word. Scatter the letters on the floor or table. The student will find the correct letters to spell the word. You could even make this a game with three or four students. Students could take turns taking a letter to spell a word. Whoever spells the most words or all of the words, win.
