Let’s get started… • Even if you don’t want to work directly in the IT/CS industry, you can’t escape the need to have good IT skills, no matter what occupation you choose… • Task: List three jobs where you wouldn’t be expected to use a computer from time to time… • Task: List three jobs that you couldn’t dowithout the use of a computer…

  3. Transferable Skills • IT skills are as important as reading and writing. Good IT skills can enable you to do better in other subjects. These are called “transferable skills”. With good IT skills you can: • Analyse data • Organise and plan more effectively • Solve problems • Design products for print and on-screen • Communicate and work as a team • Create and innovate • Research and improve your own skills

For your own business • If you want to start your own business, good IT skills are essential to the efficient running of your business… • Creating marketing and publicity materials to advertise your business • Keeping your financial accounts accurate and up to date • Communicating and collaborating with customers and suppliers • Designing new products and services

Careers in IT/CS • Programming • Systems Engineering • Technical support • Network design and administration • Database design and administration • Systems analysis, design and testing • Robotics • Scientific experimentation and analysis • Game design • Telecoms • Training & education • Music production • Over 1.5 million people are employed in the IT/CS/Telecoms sector. These jobs did not exist 20 years ago. There are a huge range of specialist jobs to cater to your interests… Careers in CS video?

Why I love IT/CS • I can create new things from nothing • it helps me do my job more efficiently and effectively • it helps me communicate and collaborate with people from across the globe • solving problems through programming is challenging and incredibly rewarding • using my skills to help others is an incredibly useful skill • Designing ways to make things people do every day simpler and quicker is a highly valued skill

  7. Career = Hobby • I turned a hobby into a career. Some things I have been spending my spare time doing… Jailbreaking, modifying and repairing my iPhone Solving mathematical challenges using programming Getting my Lego Mindstorms robot to do new and inventive things Setting up my Raspberry Pi as a media, web and database server to stream video to my TV Programming mods for minecraft

  8. What is stopping you? • Lots of people stay away from IT/CS because they see it as very difficult, requiring very particular skills. People rate programming as one of the most difficult skills to master. However, this is not true. • Watch the video to hear what some people you will know have to say about it… Why Code video?
