  1. What is Addiction ? The illicit drugs described have a high addiction potential and there is a gradual increase in their intake. The user gets dependent on these drugs both physically and psychologically . Certain changes occur at the level of cell receptors in the brain. Any attempt to reduce the dose or an effort to stop the drug gives rise to severe withdrawal symptoms which at times are life threatening.

Reasons for Addiction ? • An attempt to escape the stress and strain of modern life. • Over-expectations in life followed by under-achievements & failures. • Easy availability of drugs and alcohol. • Affect of cable network on the youth. • Increased pocket money to children, busy parents & less interaction amongst family members. • Irrational use of pain killers and their over prescription by unqualified doctors and quacks. • Social acceptance of alcohol. • Peer pressure. • An attempt to overcome social and emotional isolation. • Antisocial Personality. • Genetic predisposition. • Increased flow of NRI money.
