  1. Science Coursework - ISAs Introduction

  2. ISA • The GCSE science core subject is split into 4 areas • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Coursework (ISA) • Each section is worth 25% of your final grade… • The coursework section will take place over the next 12 lessons – although this is something which can be repeated it is very unlikely that time will allow for this within class, so it is vital you do as well as possible! • The coursework is vital to achieving a good overall grade in science…

  3. Conditions • The ISA consists of a variety of sections which will be explained throughout this presentation – specifically there are 4 areas which will be conducted under exam conditions: - • Table production • Graph production • Section 1 examination • Section 2 examination • Exam conditions mean silence when the table / graph / exam paper is given to be completed. Communication, distracting behaviour and looking at un-official resources / media devices will result in instant failure and may affect your other GCSEs!

  4. Marking • Section 1 exam (45 minutes) is worth 20 marks and consists of: - • Planning method • Investigative techniques • Section 2 exam (50 minutes) is worth 30 marks and consists of: - • Data analysis • Conclusions • Drawing a results table • Plotting an appropriate graph • Conducting the investigation in the practical lesson

  5. Work • All work must be completed in the science class, and everything you are given / produce must have your name on it and then be handed back in your plastic wallet • Hang on to everything you’ve been given and do not lose it!

  6. Homework • You are not allowed to take anything home, however it is expected that you prepare for the coursework (www.noadswoodscience.com) will help for the following: - • You know what your hypothesis of the experiment is • You consider how you can carry out your experiment and plan for it (with an appropriate method) • You have read and understand the key words glossary • You have read and understand the practice how science works guide

  7. Structure • Your ISA is split into 12 lessons as follows: - • Lesson 1 – introduction to the ISA, where you can find resources, homework task (how science works) • Lesson 2 – choosing your references (picking two references which will help you in your method planning for the experiment) • Lesson 3 – writing a method for an experiment to test the hypothesis you have been given • Lesson 4 & 5 – revision for the 1st examination section

  8. Structure • Your ISA is split into 12 lessons as follows: - • Lesson 6 – section 1 examination and producing a table to collect your results • Lesson 7 & 8 – conducting your experiment using the specific plan and recording your results in the specific table • Lesson 9 – graphing the results that have been collected • Lesson 10 & 11 - revision for the 2nd examination section • Lesson 12 - section 2 examination

  9. Sample Paper • Along with all the other resources you have been given there is a completed sample paper for you to look at • This is in exactly the same format as you will be completing, along with clues as to what to expect in the two examination sections…

  10. Preparation • Familiarise yourself with the sample paper – specifically the candidate research notes page which will allow you to write down: - • Your hypothesis • Research sources • Method • Equipment • Risk assessment • Context of this experiment (why are you looking at it)

  11. Preparation • Secondly recap your how science works vocabulary (now and for homework) using the revision sheet

  12. Preparation • Finally look at the how science works booklet which will help you in starting an investigation…
