  2. What is PDM? • Stands for Process Device Manager A configuration tool Used for: • Commissioning field devices • Maintenance of field devices • Diagnosing field devices • Displayfield devices

Now SIMATIC PDMA new, standardized approach Before PDM SIMATIC PDM for operation of all field devices and components based on EDD technology Different programs for operation of the associated field devices and components One piece of software for standardized operation of all field devices Device Descriptions (DD)

DD • Proper name is EDD = Electronic Device Descriptor • Describes: • All the parameters in the device • All the interactions between parameters in the device • How to read/write those parameters over the communication bus • Describes simple methods for performing functions (ie set address, quick start etc.)

  5. Electronic Device Descriptor Language EDDL • is a standard for Hart, PROFIBUS and Foundation Fieldbus (OPEN) • Stores information as a text file, therefore it is independent on PC operating system

A word about HART Protocol • Highway Addressable Remote Transducer • Based on Bell 202 Frequency shift keying to superimpose digital signal on top of a 4-20 mA signal • Open standard (www.hartcomm.org) • Designed to: • Replace 4-20 mA • Remote configuration • Remote diagnostics • Can be multi-dropped (up to 15) • Analog and digital communications • Analog is fast (continuous) • Digital is slow - 1200 bits/sec (i.e. 2-3 updates/sec)

HART devices on PROFIBUS DP networks • Use a ET200M remote I/O rack • Advantages: • - Have ‘best in class’ • - Over 90% of fieldbus devices sold are HART • - This solution is part of Totally Integrated • Automation (TIA) • - PDM will work fine • - Main process variable is updated just as fast • as PROFIBUS PA • - HART can be Cheaper!

HART Commands • HART commands are divided up into three types: • Universal commands • Common practice commands • Device specific commands • You can connect to a HART device by: • Using a ‘Generic’ DD that will give you just the Universal commands and Common practice commands but not the Device specific commands • Using a DD that has been written for the device that will give you access to all the commands

PDM uses HCF Library • This means: • - PDM can connect to any HART device using a ‘Generic’ DD • - PDM can connect to any HART device using the device specific DD in the HCF Library • - PDM can connect to many devices that have • had a special DD written for it for PDM • All Siemens-Milltronics equipment that has HART can connect to PDM in all three way!

  20. HART Communicator 275 (Emerson) Does not have all the HART Library in it (Library is too big) HART Communicator 275 costs approx. 3000 Euro PDM cost approx. 400 Euro for base unit

AMS software (Emerson) • Competes with PDM • Works with HART and Foundation Fieldbus • Has some nice features • However: • - AMS software not support straight use of the HCF • library • - AMS software can connect to any device but only • with Universal commands and the common practice commands. • - This is not enough to configure devices! • Device has to be made ‘AMSaware’ to use all HART commands
