Understanding Waves: Key Concepts and Definitions

This resource explores the fundamental concepts of waves, including their definitions and characteristics. A wave is a repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space. It travels through a medium, which can be a solid, liquid, or gas. Key types of waves include transverse and compressional waves. This guide explains important terms like crests, troughs, rarefaction, wavelength, frequency, period, and amplitude. Understanding these concepts aids in grasping the behavior of waves in various contexts, from sound to light.

  1. WavesVocab Nic Quinn

  2. Wave A repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter or space

  3. Medium The matter that the wave travels through is the medium

  4. Transverse Wave Matter in the medium moves back and forth at right angles to the direction that the wave travels

  5. Compressional Wave Matter in the medium moves back and forth along the same direction that the wave travels.

  6. Crests Crests are the alternating high points in a transverse wave.

  7. Troughs The alternating low points in a transverse wave.

  8. Rarefaction The less-dense region of a compressional wave.

  9. Wavelength The wavelength is the distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it.

  10. Frequency The number of wavelengths that passed a fixed point each second.

  11. Period The amount of time it takes one wavelength to pass a point.

  12. Amplitude Amplitude is related to the energy carried by a wave
