Multiplication Vocabulary Review
Factors & Products • 4 x 6 = 24 • 4 and 6 are factors – the numbers being multiplied together. • 24 is the product – the answer to a multiplication problem.
Estimate • Estimate – to make a good guess by rounding. • In the problem 73 x 6, round 73 to 70 and DO NOT round the single digit number of 6! • This would give you a new problem of 70 x 6. • You can then use the basic math fact of 7 x 6 = 42 to help you get the product. • Simply count the number of zeros in the factors and add them to the end of the basic math fact answer. The product is 420!
Multiple • A multiple is the product of any two whole numbers. • For example: 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 are multiples of 3. • 3x1=3 • 3x2=6 • 3x3=9 • 3x4=12 • 3x5=15
Properties of Multiplication • Zero Property of Multiplication – the product (answer) of any number times 0 is 0! 4x0=0 or 9x0=0 • Identity Property of Multiplication – the product (answer) of any number times 1 is that number! 4x1=4 or 8x1=8 • Commutative Property of Multiplication – two numbers can be multiplied in any order and the product (answer) is the same. 4x2=8 and 2x4=8.
Properties of Multiplication • Associative Property of Multiplication – (3x2)x4 = 3x(4x2) • You can change the grouping of the numbers you multiply! You will still get the same product (answer).
