  1. Making a difference Our alumni, parents and friends support the University in many ways in sport, from generously donating their time to making gifts that change our sporting structure.

  2. Team Durham strategy Team Durham’s goal is for Durham to be the leading sporting university in the country across the three areas of: • Performance • Participation • Community Outreach

  3. The Performance Programme Our performance programme aims to help: • Develop GB athletes • Win national titles • Retain and improve our position in BUCS to finish 3rd • Develop leaders for the future • Develop employability and skills

  4. What is needed to achieve success To achieve these we need: • Talented students who meet both the academic standard and sporting ability • Professional coaches and support staff • Excellent facilities • Our alumni and parents

  6. Advisory Group • Meet Team Durham’s Funding requirement for coaching support • Recruitment of top athletes who are able to meet Durham’s academic standards • Market the role that sport plays to enhance students development and employability • Members are alumni and parents

  8. Friends of London Steering Group • Engagement with alumni • Re-engagement with the University • Drip feed fundraising • Events • Socials • Huge database • Members are alumni

Mentoring • Alumni Sport Mentoring Scheme pairs Durham University sport club or team captains with alumni who have participated in sport while at Durham and have developed successful careers in industry or business • Objectives for mentee: Challenges of leadership, balancing academic and sporting commitments, identifying skills and experience with a view to making decisions about future careers, how to reflect skills on CV • Benefits of mentor: re-engage with Durham University • Gain understanding of issues facing students • Share knowledge and experience gained from university and afterwards

Alumni giving • Annual monthly and single gifts across the clubs in 2010/2011 totalled - £38,744 • Estimated income from alumni over the past 5 years is a little over £2M • Not included in this total (interest from investment, gift aid, gifts in kind) • Does not include £8,000 made from Canoeing from the BUCS River Race annually • Support in kind: Henley drinks, Advisory group fundraising, Zambia project funding, support, mentoring, prizes for events (Strauss dinner, bidding at events) • Does not include reduction in rent to support rowing • Hosting meetings in London for groups

  11. Parent giving • Parent giving from 7 clubs for August 2010- July 2011 = £18,000 • Engaging with parents through e-mail, events and support groups • Total does not include parents supporting by accommodating athletes and feeding them (Rowing)

  12. Sponsorship • Sponsorship for clubs raised £82,000 for August 2010 – July 2011 • (Our sponsorships are negotiated on 2/3 year contracts therefore we can guarantee £82,000 for 2011/2012 • This does not include: • Clifford Chance (Sponsorship of Mentoring Scheme venue, meal, transport) • Clifford Chance (London Steering Group)

  13. Events • Cricket dinner = £30,000 • Previous dinners with (Robin Martin-Jenkins, Will Greenwood, Andrew Strauss) • Future dinner – House of Lords • Supportive events = Rowing across the Atlantic • Engagement events – Alumni Sports Day, June Summer 7’s • Twickenham – Sea of Purple
