  2. Jamaica • When many people think about the country of Jamaica, they think of it’s sandy beaches tourist attractions of the island

  3. Social Work issue • But looking at a different aspect of the Island’s culture social work has been carried out for years in some of the poorest village communities. 

  4. Social work issue • Jamaica is ripe for professional social workers as more focus is being given to the systematic implementation of workable solutions to historical issues such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, police corruption, illiteracy, teenage pregnancy, deportees, HIV/AIDS, and the mentally ill.

Social work issue • One the biggest issues social workers for social workers in Jamaica today is the change in family Dynamics. • An increase in the number of teenage parents and a general paucity of information has led locals to complain that young people lack the skills needed to be proper parents and to provide for their children.

Social work issue • Rates of teenage pregnancy in Jamaica are among the highest in the Caribbean, with the birth rate for 15-19 year olds at 108 births per 1,000 women. • Forty-five percent of all Jamaican women who are 15 to 24 years old have been pregnant by 19 years of age, and 41% have given birth. • Females between the ages of 10 and 19 account for roughly 25% of all births in Jamaica and about 22% of births in 15-19 year-olds are second births.

Roles of Social Worker in Jamaica • As a social worker in Jamaica they want to make sure that your held to certain standard, to insure that you as a professional is capable. • As a way to ensure a high standard and help the project of social improvement in Jaimaica’s advancement you will need a Bachelors Degree or Postgraduate Degree in Social Work as an absolute minimum. • Dealing with these type of work is tough so ideally, a qualified social worker on this project would also possess at least two years’ experience of practicing professionally.

Roles of Social Workers in Jamaica • Run workshops to provide information about dealing with illness and disability and potential activities to perform with the children. • Work with existing care givers to run programs in local communities such as parenting education, skills acquisition and sessions of stimulation for children. • Organize and run training clinics for Projects Abroad Pro volunteers working in orphanages, at care centers and those working on the RCP (optional) • Take on non care-related tasks and projects such as fund-raising and organizing the purchase of equipment etc. As a Social worker dealing with the type of conditions they have in Jamaica there are various roles one has to perform.

  9. Conclusion • Child, family and school social workers strive to improve the social and psychological well-being of children, families and students. They work mainly for individual and family service agencies, schools, or state and local governments. The Social Worker’s Goal

Conclusion • They do there best to maintain a close interaction with families in Poor communities. • The Island of Jamaica has programs such as the Jamaica Association of Social Workers (JASW) who mission includes promote activities that strengthen, develop and unify the social work profession and social services in Jamaica. Overall social work in Jamaica make huge effort to help families with disadvantages in Jamaican Society.
