THE PROBLEM… • 7 million vegetarians, 12 million food allergy sufferers in US • FDA requires special labeling only on select allergies • Leaves out vegetarians & vegans • Phones now capable of capturing and processing high quality images • Create Android application to assist following dietary constraints

  4. HURDLES • Implementing OCR on Android • Learning curve – Linux setup of Android • Support for various Android phone devices • Image capture and editing (cropping) • Parsing output from OCR

  5. MAJOR WALL & SOLUTION • Accuracy of OCR in “reading” ingredients • Word & Character Dictionaries • Common reading error correction (I and lc L, etc) • Levenshtein Distance (“edit distance”)
