Aims and Objectives • To consider what the core offer looks like in practice. • To look at the role of the Governing Body and Clerk in ensuring schools meet their obligation to provide the full core offer • To look at how the Governors and whole school community worked together to achieve the full core offer at Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School

  4. About our School • Larger than average • Community School • Rural / remote location • Mixed catchment area

  5. Ofsted says ..... “ The majority of schools visited had compelling case study evidence that extended services had made life-changing differences to pupils that had led to better attendance and attitudes”

  6. Other Research • More motivated pupils • Better attendance and behaviour • More engaged and better equipped parents • Greater willingness to adopt healthier lifestyles • Better community access to local services

  7. New Ofsted Framework Focus on Extended Services “Weave comments about the effectiveness of extended services into the overall effectiveness, leadership and management and other, relevant parts of the report”

Extended Services Core Offer All schools are expected to provide by 2010 • Childcare (in primary and special schools) • A varied menu of activities including study support, sport and music clubs • Parenting support including family learning • Swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services • Community access to facilities including adult and family learning, ICT and sports facilities

  9. Extended Services Core Offer • Partnerships - schools and agencies including voluntary and community organisations • Signposting • Consultation – pupils, parents, staff and the wider community

  10. In Essex... • 64% schools are providing the full core offer • All to be validated by the end of June 2009 • Local Delivery Groups (LDG)

  11. The Role of the Governing Body • Setting the strategic direction of the school • Establishing aims, objectives and policies • Involvement in planning, setting goals and monitoring impact

  12. The Role of the Governing Body • Ensuring that the school provides access to the core offer • Working with head teachers to ensure that extended services are integrated into the school improvement plan • Ensuring that any childcare offered through the school is registered with Ofsted

The Role of the Governing Body • Ensuring that the extended services benefit the community by measuring uptake and impact • Ensuring that profits are reinvested in the service, school or cluster • Clerks should ensure that the provision and review of Extended Services appears as a regular agenda item
