  5. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship

  6. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship Colossians 2:6-8 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

  8. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship 1 John 2:18-21 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.

  10. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship 2 Timothy 4:9-10 Do your best (Timothy) to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica…”

  11. Dr. Darrell Bock “Personal trauma, the fear of rejection, or the influences of the pursuit of a life of comfort often play a dominating role in our lives. If most people were honestly asked to consider how much of their time and energy are spent coping with these issues, most of us would agree they consume the majority of our energies. Yet too often we accept their impact on us as an unavoidable given. It is easy to see why Jesus names the things he does that get in the way of our bearing fruit. Nonetheless a life dominated by these things is not headed for spiritual fruitfulness….

  12. Dr. Darrell Bock Too often our lives are driven by that which throws itself into our lives and demands our attention and fixing. Meanwhile the nurture of the soul and the pursuit of long-range spiritual development and ministry get second place. If we are not careful, these concerns are eliminated from the agenda altogether. Jesus’ warning in the parable is one we must still hear today. The only use of God’s word that bears fruit is one that clings to it with patient steadfastness and a solid heart—a heart that says the most urgent task is to walk through life with all of its traumas clinging tightly to God’s hand and his word.”

  13. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship Luke 11:46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.

  15. The Caution… A Compassionate Call to Discipleship

  16. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship “Be Very Careful, then, how you listen!”

  17. Two perspectives as One Matthew 13:13 tells us Jesus spoke in Parables AS A RESULT OF men’s hearts being hard and dull: “This is why I speak to them in parables, BECAUSE seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.” Mark 4:11 AND LUKE 8:10 record the purpose of Parables to be IN ORDER THAT men’s hearts might be unperceiving and unforgiven: “to you has been given the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, SO THAT ‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they turn and be forgiven’”

  18. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. 2 For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.

  19. The Relationship… A Compassionate Call to Discipleship

  20. The Outcome of each Heart Attitude Soil #1 Satan intervenes to prevent Salvation- resulting in continued opposition to God and the church Soil #2 Emphasis on an emotional faith pulls people away from God and the church whenever its not popular to follow Jesus Soil #3 Materialism drives people to slowly depart from the faith- following Jesus only if its convenient and offers a personal payback Soil #4 Shaving a good and honest heart results in great fruitfullness AND the title “Child of God”

  21. A Compassionate Call to Discipleship James 1:21-5 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looksintently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
