  1. going green Environmental responsibility at a YouthBuild program

  2. What does it mean to go green? • ‘Going green’ is making responsible choices so that things go right for ourselves, each other and the environment.

  3. Why go green • EXTRACTION • 1/3 of the planet’s entire stock of natural resources have been consumed in the last 30 years. • If everybody consumed at U.S. rates, we would need 3 to 5 planets. • 25% of unregulated water sources on the Navajo Reservation have become undrinkable • In mining, oil and gas sites, typically built in low income communities, residents report increased asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, liver failure, cancer and other ailments • PRODUCTION • There are over 100,000 synthetic chemicals in commerce today. Only a handful of them have even been tested for human health impacts and NONE have been tested for synergistic health impacts. • In the U.S., industry admits to releasing over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals a year. • Working in companies and pollution WWW.THESTORYOFSTUFF.COM

  4. Why go green cont. • CONSUMPTION • The average U.S. person now consumes twice as much as they did 50 years ago. • We each see more advertisements in one year than a people 50 years ago saw in a lifetime. • In the U.S. our national happiness peaked sometime in the 1950s. • Average U.S. house size has doubled since the 1970s. • DISPOSAL • Each person in the United States makes 4 1/2 pounds of garbage a day. That is twice what we each made thirty years ago. • For every one garbage can of waste you put out on the curb, 70 garbage cans of waste were made upstream to make the junk in that one garbage can you put out on the curb. 5. Why go green cont. • Closed loop production means increasing productivity and reducing waste along the whole system and reusing the waste products • Reusing the renewable energy for power and requiring producers to take full responsibility for their products • Protecting workers and communities rather than treating them as disposable • Manufacturing products that will last for many years and can be repaired, reused, or recycled, rather than dumped or burned.
