Traffic volume per month (1/3) Download (In) >> Upload (Out) • Avanti: • Up to 17 deployed sites in June 2009. • General increase of activity: • Highest activity peak in July 2009. • Evolution of average volume: from average 30 GB consumed in Jan 08 to 60 GB registered at the mid 2009. Traffic volume per month (2/3) Download (In) >> Upload (Out) • Hellas Sat: • Up to 34 deployed sites in October 2008. • General increase of activity following deployments: • Evolution of average traffic: 110 GB/month in 2008 against 200 GB/month in 2009. • Since most of the sites are school, traffic is very related to school periods (decrease of volume during holiday periods: summer, Easter)

Monthly average volume IN/OUT per site (3/3) • TTSA • Top site: Kazegi: 32 GB / 3 GB • 3 categories of pilot sites: • Sites with high activity (> 2GB): 17 sites • Sites with medium activity (1 GB < X < 2 GB): 10 sites • Sites with low activity (< 1 GB): 36 sites Three differentiated sites traffic profile: adapt system dimensioning 7

  8. 3. Inbound (download) protocol per month • « All other » category: protocols not included in previous categories. Usually corresponds to P2P. • Avanti: web browsing is the major usage of the service (70%). P2P traffic has increased during summer traffic peak 2009 P2P monitoring is constant activity. • Hellassat: web browsing (40%) and streaming/instant messaging (40%). P2P stabilized around 20% since 08 Stable P2P rules. • TTSA: main applications include web browsing (40%) and streaming (30%). P2P volume almost disapeared. Very controlling P2P rules • Other most common protocols: • Streaming: DBC server, video on demand sites • Instant Messaging, videoconferencing • Mailing 8

  9. 4. Inbound (download) protocol per site (1/3) Closely follow high P2P sites • Avanti • UK sites using larger set of applications. • Hungarian sites mainly drown by web browsing and some mailing. • Bewholme and Biggar are the responsible for the high P2P activity registered in summer 2009. 9

Inbound (download) protocol per site (2/3) Provide adapted QoS to streaming/messaging applications • HellasSat • Streaming (as Instant messaging mainly Skype) very present in HellasSat pilot sites Interesting to provide particular QoS for this service. • “All others” is present in all sites, more important in less active sites. 10

  11. 4. Inbound (download) protocol per site (3/3) Particular attention to http traffic (particular actions taken in WP5) • TTSA • Very http sites in general • Streaming appears some of the sites, usually the most active ones. • Very limited P2P usage. 11

Throughput evaluation • Throughput is a very particular metric: measured instantaneously and so difficult to analyse average values. • Example: Manso site (sat+wifi:25 users, 3rd top site for TTSA), devoted monitoring tool for throughput. Overall activity in October 2009 Average per day. 350 Zoom on one day from 11 to 12 am. Average per 30 seconds.

Test Run results – Anomalies (1/3) • Registered Anomalies (traced by SSPs Help Desk): • 123 anomalies for • 116 monitored sites • during a total cumulated period of operation of 1790 months 1 anomaly per site every 15 months of operation: very low nb of anomalies Very important role of the Help Desk and the maintenance procedure in order to ensure the success of the operation. • Typical learning curve for the anomalies: slow begin, peak during deployment peaks and 1 or 2 months later and final reduction in incidents once the deployed solution is mature and users are used to the technology. 13

Avanti Hub platform migration at the beginning of the 2008: sat modem reconfiguration (55%) ODU (15%) and wireless replacements (30%) TTSA ODU replacements (15 %) Mainly Sat modem and other network devices reconfigurations (60%)

  15. 15 Test Run results – Anomalies (3/3) • Hellas Sat: • on site intervention (60%) : >1 day • remote reconfiguration (40%) :< 1 hour) • Avanti • Hub platform migration required remote modem reconfiguration <1 day (50%) • 50% of on site interventions : 5-10 days • TTSA • On site replacement (20%) : • sending of a special team : more than 10 days • Difficulties to identify the problem and apply the correct solution made 60% of the anomalies to be solved in more then 10 days.

  17. 17 Conclusions & lessons learned Complete success of the traffic and reliably methodology defined early in the project: it enabled us to closely follow the pilot sites activities and consequently adapt RUW services. Global increase of Rural Wings usage observed since 2008. Following pilot sites deployment Maintaining activity during the whole project Full set of applications used (Streaming, File transfer, Instant messaging…) however the main application is WebBrowsing. QoS rules must follow this network usage. Keep adapting rules for particular traffic: streaming, http navigation In general P2P has been controlled Very low incidence of anomalies Crucial role of the Help Desk and the overall maintenance procedure.

Outbound (upload) protocol per month • « All other » category: more present in the upload that in the download More flexibility in the outbound for the P2P and globally less traffic. • Avanti: Cilcennin spam problem in June 2008 under control. High P2P increase in summer 2009. • Hellassat: P2P represents more than the 60% of outbound traffic. • TTSA: same progressive decrease on P2P traffic trend as in the inbound. High mailing activity in May and June 2009. 22

  23. 23 Maintenance procedure • 3. Key role of the maintenance procedure • Encourage actors (NC’s & SSPs) to use the already defined anomaly tickets for traceability purposes. • Clarification of the user support & maintenances procedure is being done (NC’s & SSPs) Clear and global procedure
