  4. Advantages of the wealthy Tax cuts-the rich pay only 20% of the share of income tax. Recent reductions in tax on income and inheritance are likely to make the income gap greater. Health care/insurance-The rich are healthier than the poor and likely to live longer because of better medical care, healthier diet and ability to exercise. Power/ influence-The rich have more political power. They vote more, lobby for laws, hold political positions , and make and cut programs for the poor. Lower sales tax rates- The poor are taxed at a higher rate in proportion to their income on purchases such as food, gas, and other purchases. Income gap “Those in the top 5% own 62% of all wealth.” Top 1% control 35% of all assets Source-Macionis, John J. “Social Problems.” New Jearsey: Pearson Education,Inc. 2012. Print

  6. Contributions to the cycle of poverty • Education-many people who are in poverty have little education. • Transportation-poor people are not usually able to pay for a car or for its maintenance so they must rely on public transportation to get to work. This may limit where they can work. • Health Problems- Many people who live in poverty cannot afford to go to the doctor or to miss work . The expense of the doctor may mean choosing between food and medical fee’s and many low paying jobs will simply replace someone who misses work because of calling in sick and do not offer sick pay. • Low wedges- Minimum wade jobs do not pay enough money to meet basic needs like housing, food, medical care, transportation, and clothing. This forces many workers to have multiple jobs or work long hours to try to support themselves and their families. • Lack of affordable housing-There is very little housing for the poor and it is difficult for the poor to come up with deposits for rentals. To cut costs many poor people live in small homes with many people that contribute to the rent.

  8. Women are among the working poor “When someone works on less pay than she can live on-when… she goes hungry so that you can eat more cheaply and conveniently-then she has made a great sacrifice for you, made you a gift of some part of her abilities, her health, and her life. The “working poor,” as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone else.” Barbara Ehrenreich~ Nickel and Dimed
