From Empire to Colony • Aztecs built most powerful empire in Mexico • By 1400 Tenochitlan was one of the largest cities in the world w/ over 60,000 Aztecs gathering to trade goods daily • In 1519 Hernando Cortes came to Tenochitlan and within 2 years he had destroyed the Aztec empire - the land conquered by Cortes became known as New Spain

New Spain • 4 social classes • Peninsulares- born in Spain • Criollos- Spanish ancestry, born in Americas • Mestizos- mixed ancestry • Indians (natives) • Hacienda- Spanish owned estates of land, usually ran as farms and cattle ranches • Spanish rulers gave conquistadors Indians to work their lands as rewards

  4. Road to Democracy • In 1810 Priest Miguel Hidalgo called for a rebellion against Spanish rule • He sparked a war of independence • By 1821 the independent nation of Mexico emerged( non-Democratic) • discrepancy b/w rich and poor remained prominent
