  1. Brighthouse Networks Cable Symposium Presented By David Dolnick JDSU DSAM METERTEST APPLICATIONSSeminar # 20

  2. DSAM Test Applications Testing Analog and Digital services Find and Fix DOCSIS 3.0 and VOIPCheck David Dolnick JDSU

  3. SEMINAR AGENDA Presented By David Dolnick JDSU • Level Mode Screen Display, Analog TV Channel (CNR) • Level Mode Screen Display, Channel Tuning of Digital QAM Channel. • Advanced Measurements from the Level Display. • DQI, and QAM Ingress • Looking for Ingress in the return and forward band.* • Full Scan Display, Looking at Frequency Response, Suck-outs. • DOCSIS Overview DOCSIS 3.0 • Docsis Configuration (Other Settings) • Ranging screen display • Understanding Throughput. • Understanding Packet loss. • Using Ping Test for various subscribers • VOIPCheck Overview.

  4. Analog

  5. Effect of Noise on Analog Systems (Gradually poorer C/N) Broadcast Quality Required FCC Spec

  6. Level Display of QAM channel Showing Quality Measurements Like MER, and Pre and Post BER

  7. Advanced Measurements like DQI provide instant error updates

  8. QAM Ingress provides ability to see ingress under active QAM Channel

  9. Upstream Spectrum has been replaced by Ingress Scan now measures out 108 MHz

  10. TV G B 4 W A y TV TV DSAM DSAM Looking for return band egress and forward band ingress in the Subscribers Home Ingress Free TAP TAP TAP CM/PC

  11. TAP TAP TAP TV G B 4 W A y TV TV DSAM DSAM Ingress Scan Showing forward and return band ingress CM/PC

  12. C M Return RF Inputs UNDERSTANDING HOW DOCSIS WORKS • What is a cable modem? • A cable modem is a 2-way RF device that converts IP packet data from • your computer or other device, to a QPSK or QAM modulated RF carrier • That is transmitted over the return spectrum of the HFC plant back to the • Cable headend. This is were the CMTS takes over. • What is the CMTS? • CMTS stands for cable modem termination system. • That’s because RF signal terminates at the cmts and are converted back to • IP packetized data for transmission via dedicated interface to service provider CMTS HFC PLANT C P E

  13. Correct Docsis Setting from Configure meter settings

  14. NEW DOCSIS SCREEN DISPLAYS

  15. NEW DOCSIS RANGE SCREEN DISPLAYS

  16. NEW OPTION AVAILABLE UNDER THE VIEW TAB

  17. Text View of the Downstream and Upstream Channel Levels

  18. From the Registration Page, you can start running the multiple DOCSIS test

  19. Throughput Page shows service level verification based on Config file • It can also be used to verify plant noise and or network contention • 0 kb/s can indicate noise on the plant which can be identified by checking MER (range) • 0 kb/s can indicate network contention (CMTS being overtaxed by active users)

  20. Packet Loss is a true two way test from point of test To the CMTS on the reverse path and back to DSAM On the forward path

  21. Ping (Gamer Set-up) Ping (Home Business user)

  22. VOIPCheck Test provides means to test voice channel

  23. Segmentation display page shows delay and jitter on both HFC plant And Server and DSAM
