what about our last book
What about our last book?
  • Mrs. Roebuck told you last week that the archive of the rest of the book is on the wiki.
  • She also told you that if you wanted to discuss the book, you could do so on the wiki.
the wednesday wars
The Wednesday Wars
  • This is a pretty popular book, so your library should have it.
  • You can also find it on Amazon.
    • I checked today and it is listed at $11.68.
choose a role
Choose a role:
  • While we’re introducing the book today, think about a role you’d like to carry out over the next few weeks.
      • Discussion
      • Vocabulary
      • Connections
  • At the end of our session today, I will ask you a poll question to see which you’re most interested in.
  • Um, what do I have to do if I pick one of these???
discussion director
Discussion Director
  • The discussion director asks questions to increase understanding.
  • Examples:
    • Why do you think the author had ___________ happen in the story?
    • How is ______________ alike/different from __________?
    • If you had been _________, how would you have ____________?
    • Asking other why or how questions.
vocabulary enricher
Vocabulary Enricher
  • The vocabulary enricher clarifies word meanings and pronunciations.
  • In this role, the person writes how the word is used in the story and checks the dictionary for the definition.
  • The vocabulary enricher will:
    • Choose new or difficult words
    • Tell where the word is in the story (page # / chapter)
    • Tell how the word is used in the story
    • Find and share the definition of the new or difficult word
  • The connector identifies connections between the story and
    • Another story
    • Self
    • World
  • The connector can ask/answer these kinds of questions:
    • Did this story remind you of any real-life experiences (text to world connection)
    • Did this story remind you of another story you have read in the past (text to text connection)
    • Did something in this story remind you of you (text to self connection)
  • More questions the connector can ask:
    • What has happened in your life that is similar to some of the things that are happening to the people in the story?
    • Do any of the characters remind you of people that you know? How? Why? Do any of the characters help you to understand the thinking of real people that you know?
    • Have you ever had thoughts or feelings similar to those of any of the characters in the story?
    • Does anything in the story remind you of something in the news or something that you have read?
  • If I pick a role, do I have to ask ALL of the questions you had up there???
  • NO!
  • Those are examples and something to get you started thinking.
  • You can even come up with your own questions. 
ok so what s this book about anyway
Ok, so what’s this book about anyway?
  • Short summary from Amazon:

Meet HollingHoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn’t like Holling—he’s sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs; angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As fate sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds Motivation—the Big M—in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to embrace his destiny, in spite of himself.

Next week
  • Hopefully a few of you have completed a role by next week so we can have a discussion that’s not all me talking the whole time – that’s boring!
  • Try to read two chapters for next week.
