Developing Futures in Education 2005-Present Early Years 1989-2005 Development Years 2005-2010 Expansion Years 2010 and Beyond Supporting higher standards for college and career readiness Building a foundation for college and career readiness standards Supporting the implementation of college and career readiness standards National Level To build support among the public and private sectors to ensure that all students are college and career ready. State Level To promote and support the successful implementation of College and Career Ready standards and assessments. Local Level To utilize our experience and share best practices from leading districts to accelerate change and scale up college and career readiness reforms through a culture of collaboration and innovation. • College Bound aimed to increase the college-going rate in selected high schools. • Math Excellence focused on long-term sustained impacts on underrepresented students in Engineering and other fields. Developing Futures in Education adopted an approach with 6 core elements implemented in 7 urban school districts. The 6 core elements equal a green light for Common Core implementation.

Developing Futures 2005-2010: District Impacts Independent Evaluation of Developing Futures proves gains in student performance Erie Louisville Cincinnati Stamford • 2,026schools; 109,323 teachers, and 1,331,360 students benefiting from DF efforts. • Louisville, KY achieved a 14-point gain in mathematics. • Stamford, CT cut its achievement gap in half. • Cincinnati, OH ranked 13th out of 609 school districts in Ohio. 4

Developing Futures 2005-2010: Lessons Learned • Recognize District and Community Needs: Adjust and adapt tools and techniques to meet local needs. • Implement Broad Math & Science Improvement Strategy: Strengthen math and science curricula to jump start change management. • Build Strong Leadership: Select leaders with strong knowledge of business culture supported by external consultants with expertise in education. • Engage Stakeholders: Engage business, community leaders, parents, non-profits, and policy makers to build and maintain an effective management structure. • Implement Targeted Professional Development: Initiatehigh quality PD for teachers, administrators & central office to enable sustained system improvement.

Developing Futures Phase I Developing Futures 2010 and Beyond: Evolution to Common Core Implementation Local Impact 7 Districts National Impact 15,000+ Districts Developing Futures Phase II Between 2005-2010, Developing Futures implemented common curricula, increased district management capacity, encouraged partnerships with local stakeholders, and trained educators. CCSS and common assessments are the next step to ensure that U.S students receive a quality education that prepares them to compete in a global economy. The GE Foundation will build on the strong foundation and lessons learned in Phase I of Developing Futures to support the broader implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Phase II.
