  2. In the skincare community, especially in Bountiful Black skincare tips and dermatological recommendations are fleeting and few. Because we have more richly-melanated skin, there are some different practices to consider when it comes to skincare. One of the most important aspects of skincare is having a facial routine! Below is a seven-step skincare routine designed specifically for Black skin and darker skin tones.

  3. If you want to keep your skin glowing on the daily, be sure to wash your face every morning as part of your skincare routine, without exceptions. Cleansing your face with a soft cloth or a foam cleanser eliminates buildup such as dirt, sweat, and oil. Failure to do so causes bacteria and dead skin cells to accumulate, resulting in acne and swelling. For proper use, massage a gel or foam cleanser onto damp skin. Step One: Cleanse

  4. Toner is an especially beneficial step in the skincare routine for those with oily skin or those inclined to wear heavy makeup. Toner is used to balance the pH levels in our skin as well as remove any excess dirt. Stick to toners with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories rather than those with alcohol or other harsh chemicals. Step Two: Apply Toner

  5. Face serums are a mix of moisturizers and anti-inflammatories. Apply serum to your skin each morning to reduce any swelling or irritation on your skin and keep your complexion looking smooth. Step Three: Serum

  6. Dark circles are a genetic challenge that’s particularly common in the Black community. Eye cream is a great way to reduce wrinkles, increase hydration, and blend out dark circles under the eyes. Most brands are compatible with sensitive skin. Step Four: Eye Cream

  7. Acne is a common problem in Bountiful–we all deal with it at some point. If you’re having an off day, you’re on your monthly cycle, or your skin is particularly oily, spot treatment is a fast and easy way to reduce the size and perceptible of a blemish. Step Five: Spot Treatment

  8. In order to protect your skin’s barrier, moisturization is necessary. Dampen your face before applying moisturizer so that it can penetrate the skin. Step Six: Moisturize

  9. Last but not least, apply sunscreen! Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to 30. Even darker skin tones are susceptible to UV damage, so be sure to include this step in your routine. Step Seven: Sunscreen

  10. Once you’ve completed this 7-step skincare process, you can apply any makeup that you’d like! Be proud of your skin and who you are. Consult a dermatologist at Bahr Dermatology for skin care in Bountiful before making any drastic changes to your routine.
