  2. What is Sports Medicine? • The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries that occur to athletes and the active population.

  4. Career Opportunities • Athletic Training: a division of sports medicine, that deals with the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and the management of the trainging methods used by professional or amateur athletes and the active population

Career Opportunities • Board of Certification (BOC): the certifying organization for the athletic trainer • The Mission: “to certify athletic trainers and to identify for the public quality health care professionals through a system of certifications, adjudication, standards of practice, and continuing competency programs”

  6. Career Opportunities • National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA): a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing, encouraging, and improving the athletic training profession • Represents and supports 30,000 members of the athletic training profession

Career Opportunities • As of 2007, over 30,000 professionals hold and maintain the ATC credential; “Certified Athletic Trainer” • To hold this credential, you must have completed an entry level athletic training educational program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and pass the BOC certificate exam.

Career Opportunities • In order to qualify as a candidate for the BOC exam you must: - have the endorsement of the Program Director of a CAATE-accredited program - Proof of a current certification in Emergency Cardiac Care -Students who have registered for their last semester or quarter of college are permitted to apply to take the exam prior to graduation providing all academic and clinical requirements of the CAATE Accreditation Curriculum have been satisfied in their last quarter or semester of college.

  11. Career Opportunities • Strength and Conditioning Specialist (SCS) has many names: personal trainer, fitness instructor, strength and conditioning specialist, strength coaches • Play an important role in the sports medicine team • Prevention, conditioning, and rehabilitation

Career Opportunities • SCS: a professional member of the sports medicine team who evaluates existing levels of fitness and athleticism, along with helping increase the strength and endurance of an individual or team while promoting a healthier lifestyle. • SCS staff will be involved in the evaluation of existing levels of fitness and the alterations of the activities of everyday life to promote a healthier lifestyle. • The SCS can work in health clubs, individual clients’ homes, high schools, or with professional teams.

Career Opportunities • The SCS must be familiar with risk factors, health status, fitness appraisal, and exercise prescription. • The SCS must be able to incorporate activities that can improve the individual’s functional capacity, along with the ability and knowledge to provide education about lifestyle modifications and individual fitness goal-setting.

Career Opportunities • Physical Therapy Aide: an individual who is not licensed but is able to perform clerical tasks under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant. • Works under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant • Keep the treatment area clean and organized while preparing for each patient’s therapy

  18. Career Opportunities • Clerical tasks (ordering supplies, answering phones, and filling out insurance forms and other paperwork) • They are not licensed, so they do not perform clinical tasks like assistants.

Career Opportunities • Physical Therapy Assistant: an individual who has earned a two-year associate’s degree and is involved in clinical tasks, such as patient care and recording treatments, under the direct supervision of a physical therapist • Must attend an accredited program that will last two years while earning an associate’s degree

  20. Career Opportunities • More involved in overlooking exercises and performing tasks like massage, electrical stimulation, and hot and cold treatment • Keep records of the treatments and report outcomes of each treatment to the physical therapist

  21. Personal Attributes • Personal attributes are important, and although every setting in sports medicine may have similarities and differences, these are some examples of essential personal attributes.

Personal Attributes • People Skills: must like people and like to be around them • Communication Skills: be able to explain important medical info to the pt, parent, coach, and others • Leadership Skills: walk the walk and talk the talk of a leader, being positive and sincere, without being patronizing

  23. Personal Attributes • Compassion: be there for the athlete; be sensitive to the situation at hand, while being positive and at the same time being the voice of reason • Good Listening Skills: must be able to listen to their needs and concerns

  24. Personal Attributes • Ability to Follow Directions and Work as a Team: throw out ego and make your first priority that pt or client • Healthy Body: stay healthy; you cannot help others if you cannot even help yourself • Sincere Desire to Learn: stay in turn with the medical world around you

  25. Personal Attributes • Positive Attitude: be there and be truthful but stay positive even if the outcome looks bleak Working in sports medicine is exciting, but it is also a big responsibility.
